Gossip and Franz Ferdinand

Today I have music for you by a more underground band by the name Gossip. This is a track I actually forgot about for a little while, until it started playing off one of my playlists. Naturally, I started to really jam out because, hey, it's been a while! And of course, hearing this song again after so long reminded me about how good this song is. Which leads us to the rest of today's post!

There is so much energy in this song, and carries the energy of a rock song. This song goes from being a brooding prowl to being an energetic disco and indie rock song. This is something we could hear from more underground rock scenes, and was especially popular in the UK. There is a very distinct rock sound, one that makes it clear that this is a rock song and not a synth pop or electronic poop song. But at the same time, it has the dance-like qualitites of those kinds of songs. There is a sense of groove to the song that is heightened by the guitar beats and melodies. This song is definitely a dance punk kind of song, and we can hear that from the music itself and the vocals.

This song has a powerhouse of a vocalist. I mean she really knows how to belt those notes out, and does so without any issue. The vocalist, Beth Ditto, has some vocal tricks which she plays around with in this song. One of the cool things she does with her voice, is switching from being a little bit softer and proper in her vocals, to a strong and intimidating growling chorus. That aggressive growl is not something we hear from a lot of female singers, and is reminiscent of singers like Joan Jett or Janis Joplin. It's something that I definitely appreciate and even admire about Gossip. We get a lot of soulful power and grit from Beth Ditto, giving the song the melodic component necessary. Without Beth Ditto's vocals, we would have a song with no melody, no harmony, and a little less spunk. However, I can easily say that the vocals are not the only winning parts of the song.

I have to give a major shout out to the MVPs of the song. The real stars of the show are the drummer and bass guitarist. Relentless rhythm and sharp basslines are what really keep this song what it is. The drums and bass guitar are the ones that give the song that killer punk dance sound They are the instruments that give this song a lot more grit and power and edginess. The guitar line in the chorus is a little rowdy, a lot rebellious, and completely bad ass. It is simple, but gets the message across supremely well. And of course in the background we have the complicated percussion work. The percussion and drum line is actually pretty layered, and I am so impressed that it is only one guy who provides us with that consistent beat. This song is just all kinds of awesome! Gossip tends to get some interesting press when they make it out there, but I really like their sound and style.

Today's instrumental song is by one of my favorite bands, Franz Ferdinand. Now I had thought about posting a movie score, but I couldn't find a score that fits with the first song the way Franz Ferdinand does. While this is a very popular song by them, I think it is one that showcases a lot of their ability as artists and musicians. There are a lot of little intricacies to the instrumentals of this song, and they also happen to meld so well with the first song. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
