Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee and Mission Impossible II
Today we are starting off with an artist from Puerto Rico! It has been ages since my last post regarding Latin music, so today I wanted to bring you some fresh sounds by the singer-songwriter known as Luis Fonsi. And when it comes to musical academia, this guy has a lot going for him. While Luis Fonsi studied music during college, he also participated in a traveling choir which took him all over the US and England. On top of it all, his songwriting skills have earned quite a few awards and nominations, including a Latin Grammy. But I realize that you all didn't come here for a biography lesson, so let's jump into the music!
This song reached the top of so many charts and did so very quickly. What is interesting to note though, is that this song is still relatively unknown. How this happened, I am not so sure about, but there are a couple of things I wanted to point out about this. First, this is the first Latin and Spanish pop song to reach the global top 10 playlist on Spotify. The music video has also broken eleven Vevo awards and has the most radio spins out of any other song in South America and Latin America. It is also a song that had the second fastest time of hitting 1 billion views, coming behind Adele and ahead of Justin Bieber. So what is it about this song that makes it so lovable? What is it about this song that made it such an unstoppable force of music?
This song is downright captivating. Any audience could find a way to love this song or at least want to jam out to it. Luis Fonsi took quite a risk but aiming the song towards a fusion style. This is not a song that is held down in the confines of one genre. Luis Fonsi found a way to blend the sounds of traditional Latin pop and urban music. That blend of sounds brings us the more traditional and intricate Latin flamenco guitar, along with the crisp bass that we get from urban music. The musicality of the song combined with the flawlessly smooth vocals of Luis Fonsi and flow by Daddy Yankee make this song irresistible. It has the ability to be romantic and sexy at simultaneously. Its both a dancefloor and radio hit. There is so much capability and possibility with the way this song is composed, that one can't help but fall for the catchy melody and bumping reggaeton beats. Luis Fonsi's "new pop" sound is magical because of how well suited it is for so many different scenarios. The versatility and overall pleasantness to the ears are what has propelled this song to so much success. I physically cannot listen to this song without wanting to dance a little. Of course, I will say Daddy Yankee did pull his weight in the song and having a name as popular as he doesn't hurt of course. What I love about Spanish pop songs, is that there isn't a clear split between the rap verses and the actual song. A lot of times, everything blends together in a way that makes the chorus stand out. The chorus will often time be the only lyrically smooth part of the song. But with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, we really get to hear that smooth singing flow throughout. It can sometimes be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins, but that flawless integration of sounds and styles is exactly what we needed. This a sultry banger, one which initially seems like wouldn't come together. However, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee really made it happen, and it is one of the best things to happen in music within the past few months.
The sensual jam is one that has really taken over the world and has been remixed plenty of times. In fact, one such remix includes the vocals of Justin Bieber. Not only do we get to hear Justin Bieber give it a go at singing in Spanish, we get to hear something that is genuinely very very good. This remixed version feels more like an extension of the original, so if you are interested in those remixes, this is one I highly recommend!
Today's instrumental song is from the movie Mission Impossible 2. Luis Fonsi's song featured phenomenal Latin guitar work, and I wanted to focus on that sound for this second song. In this, we get the opportunity to hear how intricate and precise the Latin guitar is. There is a very distinct sound which we find with this particular style, and this composition gives us a gorgeously personal relationship with the guitar. It feels as if this romantically challenging piece is written just for us. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
