Father John Misty and Inglorious Basterds
Today I have some music for you that is by an artist I have been following for a little while now. Father John Misty seems to have broken through and is on a quiet but steady rise within the music world. What I really like about Father John Misty, is the depth he has both musically and lyrically. He's also a bit eclectic, which is always a plus!
To kick us off, I want to talk about Father John Misty as a whole. He has taken on the artistic persona as someone who oddly fits a more folksy kind of sound. It is a neat progression because Father John Misty was a former member of a couple of indie bands, including Fleet Foxes. And with the latter band, we do get to hear some of that folk sound which seems to have translated over into Father John Misty's music. He also happens to be a singer, songwriter, guitarist and drummer. Meaning, he has the capability to record and produce his own music. Which he does. The production of this song is absolutely incredible! From vocals to instrumentation, the production of this song is just fantastic. We get the echoing and hefty sound of guitars and the thumping of the drums. There is something almost seductive about the drum beat, teasing us to try and sway and bob when we actually can't. Without a doubt, I can say that this folk sound is magnificent.
This song is also a bit on the raw side of things. We get to see a side of Father John Misty that many of us have ever seen. There is an edginess to this song, one that is almost seductive. There is this underlying current of something that is a bit darker than what Father John Misty is letting on. It's almost as if there is this secret kind of deranged tone to the song. It is gritty as well, which I like. This is the kind of song that seems to get into the down and dirty of things, and the way Father John Misty composes the song makes that grittiness subtle enough to not overpower. Now, this kind of sound is a deviation from what Father John Misty generally puts out there. In general, he tends to lean towards being an indie folk singer-songwriter, the kind of artist who would do well with Mumford and Sons or Hozier. But this song is particularly audacious in the way he switches vibes altogether. Father John Misty takes on a rock persona for this song and turns it into this interesting mix of folk and classic rock. As if The Beatles met Elvis Presley. It is a different sound for sure but is still one that I am a fan of. We don't hear this kind of music as often nowadays, but it works very well with Father John Misty's lyrical content. The man likes to be dark with his words. And he does an excellent job of giving life to those words with his music. In this case, we get to really indulge in that dark mindset, and after a while, it becomes pretty evident that Father John Misty really knows what he is doing when it comes to composing a song that is just as haunting as his lyrics. The hypnotizing guitar work, intoxicating drums, and calm vocals all come together to make this a truly unforgettable song. Father John Misty is definitely an artist to keep an eye on. He is going places.
Today's instrumental song is from the movie Inglorious Basterds. As is congruous with all Tarantino films, this one is a dark humored WWII film. So naturally, the music portrays that dark and stereotypical Tarantino humor. The pieces tend to be intense while sprinkled with hints of comedy and humorous rhythms. I will say, the score for this film was pretty spot on with each scene. As all good scores should, this score brought so much to each and every scene. These pieces transformed the entire way the movie was viewed and made the film that much better! So good on you Ennio Morricone, you nailed it! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
