Fences & Macklemore and American Beauty
Today I have some music for you by the band Fences. This song features the skill of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. What I like about this song is that the mix of indie rock and rap is able to mesh and fold into each other. It isn't often that you hear a combination of these two different genres, but to be honest, I could not have picked a better rapper. For a song like this, Macklemore brings this sense of sincerity and deep insight. The lead singer of Fences has struggled with a lot of demons in the past and Macklemore is a rapper who can truly understand what struggle is like. These two together bring a real sense of the world around us. They don't try to sugar coat the truth of issues that many people go through on a daily basis. Both of these artists hail from Seattle which is a city that allows many musicians to thrive and really explore different themes. Fences has a very incredible way of writing lyrics and making the most precise word choices. Each lyric of each song, including this one, has a way of evoking powerful images and illustrates exactly what they see. From what I see in this song, it is all about letting go of constant control over one's life and realizing that not everything is in our control. It is also about searching and finding yourself. In the search for my own identity, I see myself living in England. For everyone, this identity is different. Fences and Macklemore both enjoy speaking their minds in a way that is clear but still elegant and in a way that makes you think. This song has a lighter tone to it than a lot of the other songs that Fences has put out. I kind of like that however because it is almost as if he is saying that there is a light at the end of a long road. When it comes to musicality of the song, it is very percussion oriented. Most of the song is encompassed by the use of percussion as a beat and melody at the same time. There is a definite presence of the bass guitar however and I like that because it adds a full sound to the song. A lot of times it is hard to make a song that relies only on the percussion because it doesn't sound rounded out and full. The bass guitar, while softer, offers that complete sound. This song has the bass guitar a little bit highlighted too which I am happy about because the bass guitar is one of the most underrated instruments in bands. All in all, this song is absolutely phenomenal. A great message accompanied by an intriguing and enchanting song. Today's instrumental song is from the movie American Beauty. This movie has elements of darkness to it that can be similar to the feeling of darkness that the first two artists went through. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
