Small Black and Oblivion

Today I have music for you by a band known as Small Black. This song is a cool and chill song that really takes on the idea of trance and psychedelic music. There is something about this song that really captures your attention. I don't really know what that one thing is and it is so hard to discern when there are lots of amazing things happening in this song. For starters, there is a great correlation of the indie feel this song has with the idea of synthpop. I think the two styles melded very well together and made something entirely new. While still maintaining elements of the indie and synthpop feel, this song took a turn towards more chill style and dream style music. And that, that is one of the greatest things about music. You can start with two totally different things and end up with a new sound and idea. This song has very interesting vocal work. It is almost like a lower quality of recording because the vocals are so far removed from the rest of the music. There is an ethereal feel to the vocals which is absolutely lovely. I actually kind of like the fact that the vocals take a slight backseat and become more enigmatic. Each note has a slight echo which carries the individual sounds further and forces them to blend with everything else that is happening in the song. The forefront instrumental music has a very nice simplicity which highlights the calm that we get from this song. The melodies are repetitive but not too the point where they become annoying. There is always one slight variation or one little detail which is changed and that creates dynamism to a rather static melody. While the synth plays a really important role, there is a really nice background "bass" if you will that I find really good. It is still a synth, maybe a synth keyboard, but it adds a lighter tone and a brighter feel to the song. There is something about this that makes me feel like I would listen to this on a cloudy day, with moments in the song that stand out brighter than the rest. This song really takes a mastery on the idea of chill and trance and indie and making a complete mixture of the three. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Oblivion. The group that composed this score is M83 and there are no words to describe how completely incredible and brilliant their score is. This may be one of my favorite scores that I have heard. Each song captures exactly what the scene is supposed to reflect and what the meaning of that scene really means. M83 has this almost magical way of making music that hits the head, heart, and soul. This song in particular has the ability to transcend all three and take you to another state of being. A state in which you can close your eyes and face the sun and know that you are capable of everything. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
