BlackBear & G-Eazy and The 1975

Today I have some music for you which happens to be a pretty wicked collaboration. This song is the production child of BlackBear and G-Eazy, and it is one that is pretty darn spectacular. Now BlackBear is a triple threat in the music industry world. He is a singer, songwriter, and producer, meaning he doesn't really need anyone to finish his songs. I mean he has co written some pretty hge songs, produced for artists like G-Eazy, while also being a collaborator with other artists. So in a nutshell, BlackBear is one of most capable artists we have never heard of. But moving onto the song I have for you today! When the song first starts playing, you can't help but feel how incredibly chilled out this song. I mean it is the kind of song that feels so smooth, like a good scotch, and is a lounge ready kind of song. This is a song that does, however, make very good use of pop melodies and beats. This is definitely more of an upbeat and almost summery kind of song, but is one that doesn't overdo it. This song is like a warm summer evening, something that is comfortably alluring.  There is a weird element of tropical house in this song, which is actually provided by the guitar. And I really enjoy the way this effect was created without the use of synthesizers or programmed sounds. I mean that bubblier sound is the result of playing the right chords at the right time, loud enough to accompany the drums but not loud enough to outshine the vocals. There is a very bluesy style with which the guitar is played, and that adds to that really nice vibe and slightly seductive sound. This is definitely not a song to get down to, rather, it is something that you can listen to when hanging out or doing some work or just want to relax. Which is a total contrast when you look at the lyrics. The way the instrumentals are juxtaposed with the lyrics is brilliant. This song is all about falling for a girl who ends up being pretty damn shallow. Not what you would have expected if you just heard the instrumentals right? BlackBear does such an incredible job of making us feel one thing while making us think another. It is a really different kind of dynamic and I thoroughly enjoy that. But along with all of this, we get this really nice punctuated drum and bass combination. I won't lie, those two tend to take over the song a lot in comparison to they guitar. And that is not the norm, but a is a good change. The percussion additions to the song provide a lot of movement for the synths, and that is pretty crucial to give this song that silky and sleek kind of song. Now, G-Eazy's contirbution to the song is actually a lot subtler than how collaborations generally go. BlackBear does most of the singing and provides most of the verses as well. But G-Eazy swoops in and gives the song an extra kick of swagger. Not your stereotypical swag, but this legitimate swagger to the song. He has a softer voice, one that blends perfectly with the more laid back instrumentals. This is one of my favorite things G-Eazy has ever done, to be quite frank. And I am super excited to go listen to more BlackBear because his music is pretty unique and definitely something that I enjoy. Today's instrumental song is by one of my favorite bands- The 1975. In all honesty, BlackBear really reminded me of this band. Both of them have those band elements that are common in rock groups, but the way they utilize those instruments creates a song that is so unlike most rock bands. There are parts of synth pop, some ambient background music thrown in there, and these mellow and smooth vocals. What more could you ask for from a group like this? I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
