Lorde and Snow White & The Huntsman
Today I have music for you by Lorde. In honor of the great music festival Austin City Limits, this week all of my music is coming from artists featured in the lineup. Lorde performed today and I thought that it had been a long while since posting a song like this. Lorde has a great ability to make songs that have very complex harmonies between the vocals and the instruments. This song is no different and it has that darkness that you can hear from movie scores. Quite simply put, this song is brilliant. While I am not a huge fan of Lorde's very popular songs, you get to hear gems like this when listening to music other than the radio songs. But to be fair, this is a cover of a song by the English band Tears for Fears. You may have heard of them before because they are pretty awesome. This cover just has such a cinematic feel to it and it has the ability to be used in a number of areas. From movies, to tv shows, to video games, this song can fit. I think the timing of this cover is also very good. The lyrics and meaning of the song call out society on being brainwashed, unoriginal, and conformist. In my opinion, today's society fits that description. The fact that Lorde covered this song at this time and the way she covered it really brings things to light. This is not a conventional cover in which it is the same rendition of a song with no flair. Lorde really throws in her own style to make this cover hers. It is very different from the original and I am so happy that it is! The heavy orchestral use really pulls this song out of the sphere of popular music. It takes you to this limbo that lies between the world of music and film which is simply fantastic. Lorde doesn't try to do anything to fancy or strange with her voice and keeps it low with some growl to it. For a song like this, that darker undertone is perfect. That growl nature fits like clockwork with the stylistic elements of the orchestra. The tempo of the song is slow, but that emphasizes everything about the song. It is not a languid and lethargic song. Lorde did a fantastic job with this cover and I am very impressed and satisfied with the cover. Today's instrumental song comes from the movie Snow White and the Huntsman. I am not going to lie, this score is one of my favorite scores from that year. A whole range of emotions is expressed in this song, but all of these have a slightly dark undertone. James Newton Howard is an absolutely phenomenal composer and for a movie like this, the score could not have been more perfect. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
