Judah & the Lion and Deadwood

Today I have some music for you by a band called Judah & the Lion. This is a band that plays a style of music that is slowly becoming popular. I was very impressed with this song when I first heard it because it has such a hearty sound to it. That Southern soul which isn't country music is what makes up this song. I really really like it! This might sound like music Mumford and Sons or The Lumineers put out, but Judah & the Lion have a very different soul to their music. Part of it may be easier for me to recognize because I am from the South. But there is less country to this song and more Americana in it. This is more folksy fiddle music and carries over a lot of the sub genres that make up Americana music. I really like the way they perform this song in the video. You can tell that Judah & the Lion has fun doing what they do and really enjoy making music. There is enthusiasm and energy which carries over into the song itself. This song does have a liveliness to it and I love the way the banjo switches from regular speed to halftime. It makes the song seem like it is speeding up and slowing down when in actuality it stays the same. The lead singer Judah Akers has such a great voice! He sings with clarity and soul. His voice doesn't jilt and crack like some singers of this genre do but he still has that folksy tone to his voice. His voice is one that is kind of hard to describe because it is very unique but is also something that you could hear from certain radio stations. Judah Akers does have a lovely voice though and he really sings with passion. The mandolin in this song sounds really wicked. Yes it is a mandolin, not a baby guitar. You can also tell that he is hardcore jamming out to the song. I think that is one of the things which makes this band so likeable. They look and sound like they are having fun. Sometimes bands look very stoic when they play, but these guys move around and make weird faces and have a grand time. Not only do they have great music, but they seem to have great personalities as well. I think these guys have a really good shot at becoming hits and hopefully they make it to all the radio stations! Today's instrumental song is from the TV show Deadwood. This was an HBO show but got cancelled sadly. This was one of the best Western shows out there and it is pretty much the best one since. But this has a darker side of folk music and takes on more of that country feel that people associate with music down South. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
