The Weeknd & Daft Punk and Fergie

Image
Today is all about the latest in the music world, so we are starting off with an interesting collaboration done by Daft Punk and The Weeknd. Now I am not necessarily surprised by this combination. Daft Punk likes to get creative with their work, and this song is no different. The Weeknd is unlike any other artist they have worked with before, and Daft Punk is a duo that The Weeknd probably wouldn't have even thought about working with. But these two artists have come together to create a song that isn't really either artists' style. That is what makes this song pretty interesting to listen to, because in all honesty, I have not been able to decide if I like it or not. This song is definitely an evolutionary step for Daft Punk, as I have never heard them produce a song as chilled out and mellow as this one. I will say, Daft Punk's beats serve as a great support to The Weeknd's vocals, and there is a good bopping energy to it.Perhaps the reason I am a little thrown by...

Amy Winehouse and Nat King Cole

Image
Today I have music for you by an artist who is one of the most iconic singers of the common era of music. Amy Winehouse had a voice that was sultry and powerful, a voice that was recognizable anywhere and everywhere. Her voice is a beautifully raspy voice which gives her songs that feeling of being lost in a smoky jazz room. Amy Winehouse was a woman of many gifts and talents, most known for her vocal capabilities. She is the kind of singer who captured the calmer and the more subtle and provocative nature of jazz music while being very upfront and open about mouthing off. There is a very charming nature to her music because of that, and it is hard to not be seduced by her originality and creativity. One of the things that make Amy Winehouse such an icon for this generation, is her modern twist to an older style of music. Swing and jazz were once the most popular sound, and Amy Winehouse beautifully takes that style and makes it her own. She adds her own rebellious spirit to the music,...

Foxy Shazam and Rock Mafia

Image
Today I have some music for you by a band that is definitely way under the radar, but is a a wild one! Foxy Shazam is just as out there as their name is. I did have the experience of seeing them perform live, and holy hell it was a ride! These guys know how to play their instruments and sing well live, but they also know how to really perform. For them, it isn't enough to be able to play their songs live. There is a certain amount of theatricality that goes along with their shows and videos. But you can even hear it in the music. Foxy Shazam does have a certain dramatic flair in their actual music, from the braying brass to the jingling bells. It all has this Broadway-esque feeling to it, but is something that is so completely captivating. This song is actually one of my favorites by them. To be totally honest, I don't remember when I first heard their music. But I am so glad I did because it is such a cool kind of sound. I love how the song opens up with the ticking clock and ...

2 States and Midnight in Paris

Today I have a song for you that comes from the wonderful world of Bollywood music. Now I know I have posted a variety of songs in the past regarding Bollywood, but this song is very different from most of the styles I have posted. See, this is a song that is all about the sadness of to being able to be with the one you love. And it doesn't seem that way because of how beautiful and almost light the song is. But in a way, the melody of the song is something that is reminiscent of the wonderful moments, the ones that you will always remember. Hindi lyrics are some of the most beautiful I have ever heard. When you understand what the song is saying, or go look up lyrics, there is this indescribable sense of truly loving someone. The words express the love for another in the most poetic way possible. One thing I have noticed about Indian songs in general is that they tend to use the sun and moon as focal points for these kinds of songs. The Sun represents one in the pair, while the ot...

Melanie Martinez and Edward Scissorhands

Image
Today I have some eclectic music for you by the artist known as Melanie Martinez. I had no idea that she was a contestant on the X-Factor! It is kind of incredible to see how different her sound is compared to other X-Factor contestants. Melanie Martinez has such an original and creative sound and look to her, something I can really appreciate! I think a great way to describe Melanie Martinez is surrealist flow. Her music doesn't necessarily have a very "set in stone" structure. While her songs do have a specific pattern they follow, the structure of those patterns allows for a lot of wiggle room. Her music has a dark and dream-like feel to them, painting pictures of scenes out of a Tim Burton film. Her music is almost jarring, enough so so that the tunes stick in your head for a long while afterwards. There is a sense of having pop tendencies to the songs, but that theatricality her songs have make it an absolute masterpiece. Added to that is the lyrics she writes and si...

Travis Garland and Chris Brown

Today I am back with a fully functioning computer, which is why I wasn't able to post last night. But, today I have some really smooth music for you by the singer known as Travis Garland. And let me tell you, this is a man who will blow you away. The way he sings is just so damn sexy! He has such a smooth and suave voice, one that screams R&B like no other. Travis Garland has everything, He has the good production, great music, and a phenomenal voice. He even has the looks! Which I am definitely a fan of...But anyway, let's get the ball rolling with talking about the general musicality of the song. I won't lie, this sounds like a standard fast-paced R&B song to me. I don't necessarily hear anything totally unique, but it is a catchy sound, one that is very ear pleasing. To me, this song is like a weirdly pepped up version of the Eminem song "Lose Yourself." Not in terms of content, but in the way it sounds. The opening has that guitar work going on, an...

Jack Vidgen and Labrinth

Image
Today I have a song for you that is an absolute classic. This song is possibly the most famous songs by Whitney Houston and is a song that people around the world recognize. However, the version I have for you today is actually a cover of the song. This cover is sung by the Australian singer, Jack Vidgen. I would like to first point out that we have a male who is tackling this song. It isn't often that we hear male vocalists cover this song, but I really like that switch up. Second, I want to point out how incredibly beautiful Jack Vidgen's voice is. I mean it is like smooth marble. His voice is extremely powerful but so sweet at the same time. You can clearly tell that he is feeling this song as he performs it. There is so much passion and strength in his voice, and the real kicker is that Jack Vidgen was a young teenager when he recorded this. Can you imagine being fourteen years old and having a voice as magical and unbelievable as his? The rarity of his talent and skill is ...
