My Life as Ali Thomas and Caspian

Today I thought we could go with something on the softer side of music. It has been a while since I've posted anything along the lines of folk or indie music, and this song just spoke to me. Today's music is by the artist known as My Life as Ali Thomas. This is a group out of Thailand, and they have absolutely swept me away. I will admit, music like theirs is not a phenomenon. We hear indie and folk music like this often enough if you know where to look. But what makes this group really stand out, is their brilliant command of instrumentals and composition. This track is a great example of their beautiful work.

My Life as Ali Thomas relies solely on conventional instruments it seems. Nothing electronic or synthetic. And I won't lie, that is a really nice change of pace. All we hear are the gentle acoustic guitars, the quiet electric guitars, tapping drums and dreamy vocals. Everything is so raw and real in a way that we sometimes can forget given that so much music today is filled with electronic based sounds. But when talking about this song, I want to start with the vocals before really diving into the instrumentation.

The vocals on this track are provided by the lead singer Pie Wuttara. She has a unique voice, one that makes her both blend in and stand out. I can't say I would immediately recognize her voice if I heard her singing something other than My Life as Ali Thomas' songs. The physical sound that her voice has is not one that I would say is ridiculously different or recognizable, the way Adam Levine's or Beyonce's might be. But what makes her voice really stand out, is the emotional honesty which runs through. It isn't often that we come across voices that really personify emotion. Sure, we have vocalists who can sing with emotion or perform with a raw vulnerability. But it is another thing to have your voice actually be emotion. To convey emotion in every word and every breath. I feel like this is something that Pie Wuttara does very well. There is a feathery effortlessness which accompanies her voice. She has a rougher and huskier voice, but it remains light and gentle and even comforting. That kind of performing power is not something you hear every day, and that makes her really stand out and make an impression. And her voice is only bolstered by the beautiful instrumentation.

This song is a divine blend of guitars, both electric and acoustic and drums. The simplicity of the instruments is stunning, and even more so enchanting to hear how they create complex melodies. This song is nothing short of a warm but melancholy story. The instruments create a swirling poignant landscape, one that makes us feel a strange contentment. This song is not happy nor sad. It isn't a cry out for an unrequited love nor is it an anthem for the one love who makes everything right. This is a purely human track. It is a reflection of humanity. The highs and lows that we face, and the fact that we are at both points simultaneously. This is a track which brings a sad smile to the face. It is a somber hopefulness. There is a coexistence of seemingly opposite emotions, sentiments, and feelings which are actually two sides of the same coin. The acoustic guitar brings that warmer sound to the soundscape, while the electric and bass guitars give the track a little bit more of that pensive and wistful. All the while, the drums gently pat along, a softer and more inviting sound. The complexity drawn from the simplicity of few instruments is stunning in this track, and I absolutely love the work My Life as Ali Thomas has put together. I highly recommend checking them out!.

Today's instrumental song is by the band known as Caspian. This is a group which specifically focuses on creating instrumental tracks. One of the great things about these guys is that each and every album sounds very different. We don't ever feel like we are hearing repeats of past albums. And each album has a story to tell, a theme and motif of emotion. This track is from their latest album and is one of the slower songs off the album. I found this to be such a beautifully heartbreaking song. The acoustic guitar seems to be singing out for everything it has ever wanted. It is wistfully calling out to what matters most. Again, we have a song which tells much of its story through the instrumentiaon alone. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
