Breaking Benjamin and X Men: First Class

I feel like it has been such a long time since I have talked about some hardcore rock music. So today I have some heavy rock music for you all. This song just started playing in my head earlier in the evening, and it feels like a nice throwback to the time when rock music was full of this grit and grunge.

Breaking Benjamin  I know it was for me, especially because this song definitely seemed to capture my mood for part of the day. This is one of the my favorite songs by the band Breaking Benjamin. A lot of people have heard this song, and many have fallen in love with it. For me, it is easy to see why this would be so popular among all age groups. Breaking Benjamin creates music that is very raw. Each song has a depth to it which we can all appreciate because we have been there. And that rawness is something to be commended.

Now one of the reasons Breaking Benjamin isn't what we would call main stream rock, is due to their stylistic elements. One of the most prominent (and my absolute favorite part about the band) is the screaming. The lead vocalist of Breaking Benjamin has a voice that is rough and scratchy and gravelly - absolutely perfect for giving us that wild scream. It is not often that we get to hear artists who can pull that off flawlessly. But Breaking Benjamin has been able to do so with so much character and emotion. Benjamin Burnley's voice is so incredibly recognizable. He has so much power and a distinct growl in his voice which makes it easy to figure out if a song belongs to Breaking Benjamin or not. And that voice is one that is definitely underappreciated but widely respected.

For one, the overall sound is one that is very full and very rock. There aren't any moments in the song where the musicality feels empty or incomplete. Everything sounds perfectly in sync, with the drums and the guitar providing an incredible base structure for the vocals. The crunching guitars allow the emotional content of the lyrics to really bleed through the song. The consistency that we find with Breaking Benjamin is absolutely phenomenal. While the band evolves a little bit, there is this signature sound that they stick to, yet it works. This is a song that mixes heavy hard rock dynamics with a moody and stormy demeanor. Breaking Benjamin is not an angsty band in the sense that the musicality and tonal nature of the song does not scream "angst." There is a darker tone to the band, that is for sure. But unlike those pop punk bands we loved in middle school, Breaking Benjamin likes to explore dark motifs and ideas to get their thoughts and feelings across. Clearly a fantastic song to have climbed the charts despite being a hard rock song.

Today's instrumental song is from the movie X Men: First Class.XL Junkie is one of the kings of film composition and is a reigning expert on creating rock oriented scores. His work often features stunning electrical guitar work and massive drums which create an overall epicness. His scores are empowering and bombastic. This is just an amazing theme to have as a villain. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
