Jonas Blue and Moana

Today I have some music for you by the DJ known as Jonas Blue. I thought that on a cold wintery day like this, a little reminder of some sunshine and beach time would be welcome! And that is exactly what we get with Jonas Blue. This is a DJ that really pulls off that tropical and tiki kind of vibe. His musical style is definitely different yet similar to Kygo's which is really cool. With Kygo, we get that tropical house sound which is fun and soft and carefree. We hear that same kind of sound with Jonas Blue, however it is taken in a different direction. Instead of focusing more on the house part, Jonas Blue takes his music towards the tropical sound. He takes it in the direction of that Caribbean and Hawaiian kind of tropical sound, which is something unique and refreshing! Jonas Blue is actually a great introduction to the genre of tribal house. This is definitely similar to tropical house, however focuses more on live instrumentation rather than synths. These are the kinds of songs you could play live without the use of electronic help, and the song will still sound similar. It is really cool to hear this song as a dance version since Jonas Blue composed it to be heard on everything from an acoustic guitar to the DJ set of a music festival. His melodies work on all kinds of instruments, and that musical versatility is really incredible.  And for percussion, Jonas Blue focuses more on those tribal and ethnic drums. This gives the song an ever changing percussion sound. The song relies on sophisticated percussion rhythms to provide a really nice tropical energy and sound. This combination of house music and world music is something we don't hear as often, but I really like this evolution. We get to see a more soulful and playful side of electronic music. And this song has a lot of soul to it, which I really enjoy. This is a very strong summer jam, one that combines the sunshine and the warm nights in a way that is picturesque and a bit like soul food. J.P. Cooper's vocals are strong and inviting, creating a really great tone to envision a summer beach. One of the great things about this song is that the music video actually provides us a visual for how the song feels. Music videos can be a bit tricky. Either they suit the song perfectly, or they end up being some kind of random video/disaster we get sucked into. That is why I normally don't watch music videos, for the sake of not ruining the actual music for myself because of some silly video. However the music video for this song is beyond perfect. It beautifully and sublimely captures the meaning and vibe of the song. I mean, there isn't another way this video should have been done because this is absolutely perfect. The combination of sounds and visuals makes Jonas Blue's hit something that is well rounded and vivaciously encompassed. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Moana. I have to say, this movie looks absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to see it! Now the reason I chose this particular film score and song is because of how well it relates to today's musical theme. Today is all about that tribal tropical sound, which is exactly what Moana gives us. This is a movie about a tribal people, and naturally, the score reflects that theme. This is a perfect fit of modern orchestral sounds and that traditional tirbal sound. In a way, it is like bringing two kinds of classics together to create something that is modern and spellbinding. Now I highly recommend listening to the entire Moana album because not only is the composer, Mark Mancina, a brilliant thinker, but the lyrical songs are done by Lin Manuel Miranda. If we want to talk about brilliance, Lin Manuel Miranda is up there with some of the greatest artists the world has ever known. But this score beautifully reflects the mix of sounds and I love the way it all falls into place. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
