Kanye West & Chance the Rapper and Kirk Franklin
Today I have music for you by the one and only Kanye West. Now before things get a little out of control, the reason I am posting a song by one of the biggest rap giants of our time, is because of how incredible this song is. The first time I heard this song, I was legitimately floored by how powerful the lyrics are. This song is one that is so powerful in its simplicity. There are no big beats, energetic synths, or deep bass. This is a song that hinges on the sound of the gospel. This is a song that weaves organs, gospel choir, and sermon into a song that is nothing short of a masterpiece. Kanye West and Chance the Rapper have created something that is deep to the core, full of rich commentary and incredibly clever lyrics. What I find interesting is that Kanye West takes a back seat in this song. We don't hear much from him at all throughout the song, leaving most of the rap components to Chance the Rapper. In this way, Kanye West takes on this persona of an omniscient viewer. He spends his focus on the larger events, the ones that we all know have happened, like Paris.Chance the Rapper and The Dreamers take on the internal turmoil. They take on the inner conflict and war that rests inside each and every one of us. This open acknowledgment is something we don't hear enough of in music. Kanye West is this interesting presence of someone who is a higher power and a fallen status. This song professes belief with such clarity that it is unmistakable as to what the song is trying to say. With this song, we get a profession of penitence and atonement. Kanye West starts by asking for blessings and praying for the world, before retreating into the background. This was a unique selling point for this song. Kanye West has the reputation of being a narcissist, but the way this song is handled is a complete contradiction. Kanye West chooses to be in the background. He chooses to make this a song that is about the redemption of a sinner, a masterpiece full of the story of finding faith. Chance the Rapper takes the forefront with this song, rapping about his personal life. His verse is one that is full of nostalgia and emotional reminiscing. There is such a strength and vulnerability to Chance the Rapper's verse. The religious and spiritual motif of the song is found withing Chance the Rapper's verse, and the play on words with the song ae nothing short of absolutely incredible. His verse is one of the more powerful and moving components of the song, and he did a great job of reaffirming his importance in the song. This song is one that is unconventionally fantastic, using characteristics about music that most people would. Kanye West' production of this song is something I am very impressed with. The orchestration of this track includes the unique group of musicians and artists. And that is a good sign for the future of music. This song is one that is stirring, full of an uncommon intensity and vision. The transition from prostrating in front of God, pleading for answers to the world's evils, turns it into a song about redemption and surrender. Regardless of the style of song, the content is something that makes this song one that is easily remembered. We probably won't have another song like this from any other artist for a long time to come. The strength and power and sincerity of this song are strong forces to be reckoned with, and this has to be one of Kanye West's best pieces of work throughout the span of his career. Todays' instrumental song is by Kirk Franklin. This is the man who delivers the sermon at the end of the first song. I decided to make this instrumental song about Kirk Franklin for two reasons. First, he is a well-recognized artist in the Christian music world, which means he isn't really that popular in the general music scene. Second, I had to give Kirk Franklin more credit outside of the first song. His work is phenomenal and rather pensive as well. This is exactly what the first song is all about and it seemed like the perfect fit. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
