Die Antwoord and AWOLNATION

Today is day 3 of the ACL Festival line-up, and I've got some weird music for you. A music festival in Austin would be incomplete without the appearance of a popular artist who could also be the poster child for "Keep Austin Weird." Die Antwoord is a South African rap-rave group who takes the word "eclectic" very seriously. The creative outlet that Die Antwoord has is one that people either love or find to be a joke. Now I won't lie, my first experience with Die Antwoord left me pretty shocked and confused. I didn't know how I felt about the group, and even now I am still unsure. But what I can tell you, is that they have a huge cult following. Die Antwoord's style is described as "zef" which basically translate to modern-trashy. Which I actually really understand since watching them perform and listening to their music. The music itself isn't trashy, but the style makes it sound like a chaotic and raw kind of sound. Since I don't have an opinion about this group yet, what are your thoughts on the group? Is this a yes or no? Today's second song is by a better-known artist here in the States. AWOLNATION is an amazing artist, a band who produces his own music, writes the lyrics, and performs like a baller. AWOLNATION has his own style of electronic music, one that is a really smooth mix between being alternative rock and dance music. I really like AWOLNATION for their diverse style. Their songs sound unique in comparison to each other, something that a lot of musicians start to lose as time goes by. But this is a band that still keeps us on our toes! Today's song is a really cool one out of South Africa by the band Kongos. There are so many awesome things happening in this song. For example the first sounds you hear is this really sick accordion work, and yes, these guys made the accordion look even cooler than any other musician out there has. I love the way they use the accordion and the tone of it. And then you hit the chorus which has these really strong vocals and you get the feel from the multiple voices with these sweet guitar licks and such a loud presence with the electric guitar. This song just kicks some major ass! Today's song is by the Beastie Boys, and is one of my favorite songs by them. Ima Robot and Tame Impala

Today I have a song for you by the band known as Ima Robot. Many of you will recognize this song because it is used in the show Suits. Disclaimer, Suits is a wonderfully fantastic show and I highly recommend you go watch it. Anyway, this song has a really cool and suave feel to it. It has that artsy urban grunge to it which I really like. It is a different way of performing rock music and takes you back to the 90's style of music. This song has a really cool charm to it because a lot of the song falls on the support of the bass guitar over the drums. The bass guitar serves as a secondary percussion to the rest of the instrumentals. It is actually kind of awesome how simple the instruments are in this song because when you bring the together you hear a really sick song. The main instruments are of course the bass guitar, tambourine, drums, and keyboard. Nothing else makes an appearance and I like it that way. The music in this song is so structured but so laid back at the same time.

Zayn Malik and Interstellar

Today I wanted to give a shout out to an artist who is both very famous and very underground. Most people know him as Zayn Malik, that guy who was in One Direction but left the band. So a little background, Zayn Malik was one of the five members of the famous boy band, One Direction. His departure from the band was all over the news last year, and I wont' lie, I felt bad for him. Not because he left the band, but because of what that meant for him in the public eye. It marked him as a huge target for papparzi and press, and I just feel so bad for him because he had to live in that public eye for so long. Which is one of the reasons why he wanted to leave. To live his life more quietly. So that of course, is a consequence of his level of fame. But on the other hand, we have his more quiet and surprising side.
