Andy Mineo and Flo Rida
Today I have some music for you by an underground rapper by the name Andy Mineo. I think the easiest way to describe Andy Mineo's style is to call him a mix of Kanye West and Childish Gambino. Of course individually, both of those artists are phenomenal and excel in their craft. But put them together and you get some wicked cool music! Andy Mineo absolutely nails the whole idea of "rap" music. He has every characteristic of a good rap song, and one that could get very big very fast. Now the reason I picked Childish Gambino as a point of reference is because of the way Andy Mineo raps. His style is very similar to Childish. Andy Mineo gets clever with his lyrics and he likes play on the words he uses. But at the same time, his lyrics have meaning to them beyond the general rap topics of sex, drugs, alcohol, and money. Let us be completely honest, a lot of the modern rap game is completely overrun with those topics. But I like how Andy Mineo changes it up for us, the same way Childish does. He is also very skilled at the action of rapping. I mean the speed with which he can rap is just outstanding! There are very few rappers who can pull that off well, despite fast rap being a new trend we see, and Andy Mineo does an incredible job of that. Now for the music itself, the other half of song production. This is the part that reminds me of Kanye like no other. The fact that the song starts with that comedic fanfare and then turns into something really intense is exactly like Kanye West's style. This is a percussion heavy song, but also utilizes programmed music to add even more intensity to the song. This is definitely more of an electronic and progressive sound for a lot of artists to pursue. But I personally think it works really well. What I think is the absolute coolest thing is that this song makes really good use of acid jazz. It is very rare to hear acid jazz in the first place, but to have a rapper use that genre of music is like a blue moon. But it works in this song so fantastically well! I mean that trumpet doesn't start with that little intro fanfare. You can actually hear the trumpet in the background. Granted, it is definitely underneath the more important sounds like the percussion and dubstep-ish electronic work, but it is still there. And speaking of dubstep, what a nice twist that is to the song. This definitely has an older kind of electronic sound to it, with the heavier influence of programmed music instead of synthesizers. But, it just makes the song sound that much nastier! I love it! Andy Mineo is an artist that shows huge potential with his work, and I really cannot wait to hear more music from him! Today's instrumental song is one of the biggest songs of the year. Yeah, I know, this song is pretty much everywhere and most people have already heard it. But for those of you who haven't here is a preview of one of the biggest Top 40 songs of the year. Now I am posting this song because of how similar it is to the first song. Flo Rida has the reputation of being able to produce some really catchy music. And this is one song that fits that description. But, it also has a lot of electronic influence and complements the first beautifully. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
