The Pretty Reckless and Seventh Son

Today I have music for you by a band called The Pretty Reckless. I am not going to lie, the first thing that really caught my attention was the vocals in the song. It is really hard to find female vocalists who can really pull off that hard rock sound. Most female voices don't have the scratchy, edgy, and gritty voice that Taylor Momsen has. I love her voice for that! It sounds like a very mature rock voice despite the fact that she is pretty young. Her voice is very reminiscent of Joan Jett, a woman who has a kick ass voice and is one of the queens of hard rock.  She also kind of reminds me of the vocalist from Dead Sara. The thing about these vocals is that it fits so damn well with a song like this. And what is even more impressive is that she actually sounds like this live. I know a lot of rock bands with vocals like this don't actually sound that great live, but Taylor Momsen really knows how to use her voice and she sounds exactly the same. This is both awesome and relieving because if she didn't sound this good live too I might have been a little disappointed. But her voice is so well suited to hard rock and borderline metal as well. But her voice also compliments the chorus vocals. The group chant was so effective and sounds so good in this song because it really fits the lyrics. It also reinforces the idea that it isn't just one person who is following the words of the song.  The choir chorus was just such an awesome addition to the song and makes it even more sick. But moving on from the vocals, the instrumentation is pretty nasty in this song. This is definitely a slower beat song, but it has that hard hitting beat, the kind you would imaging when someone is hacking at something with a pick axe. It has that steady rhythm with every other beat heavily hit and that makes this song a little bit more edgy. It adds that extra intensity and heavy rock feel to the song. This song has a stripped down vocal line that is accompanied by a kick drum and tambourine for a majority of the song. This is very similar to songs from groups like Queen and Guns N' Roses. But then we also get that more fresh and modern side of heavy rock. This song balances out the new and old very well to create something that still remains appealing to crowds of new rock and the older ones. This song just has so much grunge and grit to it that I can't help but love it! The Pretty Reckless was never a band that I actively got into, but after hearing this song I will definitely need to listen to more of their music because it really kicks ass! Today's instrumental song is from the movie Seventh Son. This score is pretty awesome because the song captures the intensity and mystery the is supposed to accompany the movie. Whether it does, I am not quite sure as I have not seen the movie, but the music seems to be spot on. This song has that intense and grittier orchestral sound which is definitely helped along by the electric guitar work. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
