Fleet Foxes and Water For Elephants

Today I have music for you by Fleet Foxes. This song is a really nice song to listen to while doing something relaxing or easy going. I hadn't heard this song until recently but I fell in love with it. Everything about this song is so nice to listen to and it is very different from a lot of the folk music we hear today. This is folk music that has a slightly darker undertone to it, but while this song does have a little bit of that darkness, it has these brighter spots which adds so much to the song. I love the vocals of this song. The first thing we hear is the vocals of the lead singer and his voice has a very nice twang to it. It is not a heavy Southern twang, but is a slight trace that gives this song a folksy sound. The harmonies in this song are absolutely wonderful as well. There are three and four part harmonies in this song and all of them are flawlessly executed. This song has a sound that is both urban and rustic at the same time. I love this so much about the band. They fulfill the sound that you would hear from a hole in the wall bar in a huge city. They capture the urban feel of going on and on, but they also get the freedom that accompanies the rustic and more folksy sound. This is a song that evokes a lot of different images in the head. Sometimes I think of being in the complete freedom of nature and being in a place where I can really connect with the world. Other times, especially during the melody played between verses, I can see myself walking. Just walking from place to place, through the streets of a bustling city. Completely surrounded but lost to my own thoughts. This concept is illustrated in the instrumentation of the song. The guitars kind of do what they want and where the music takes them. You can tell when this happens at the points where the melodies switch from being major to throwing a minor note in and then returning back to being a major key. But the drum beat provides a steady rhythm and heartbeat which keeps all the music in a controlled chaos. This song has some very interesting lyrics as well. This is a song that remain more enigmatic than most because some of the lyrics sound like they could be about or come from a fairy tale. Something about that is intriguing and a little bit eerie because they chose to reference tales that are well known but don't always have good things happen in them. This song in general is a very intriguing one from all areas of production. The layered harmonies offer a complex but soothing sound. The instrumentation is reigned in madness but still remains euphonious throughout the entirety of the song. I am very excited to hear the rest of this album because it will offer me a sound that I know I have not heard before. Today's instrumental song comes from the movie Water for Elephants. This song doesn't have a folksy sound to it but it does have that balance between being somewhat dark and eerie and having a lighter tone to it. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
