Disclosure and Freddie Joachim
Well, ladies and gentlemen, it has been a very long time since I last posted. But I'm really happy to be back and I have honestly missed writing about music so much. And to kick things off I wanted to go ahead and start with one of the newer symbols by Disclosure which recently came out. Let's get right into it!
Disclosure is very well known for having really catchy beats and complex harmonies and melodies. Fortunately for us, that doesn't change with their newer single and in fact, the duo takes on a very interesting type of sound in this track. We don't normally get to hear Disclosure go for something a little bit more old school so this is a very nice fresh change and it's a sound that works really well with Disclosure's style.
I think one of the biggest things in this track that is worth noting is the way the vocals are presented. I wouldn't necessarily say that they are very clear and distinct and crisp, but it's still easy enough to understand what the lyrics are saying. The vocals have a slightly hazy and fuzzy sound almost as if they come from an old record or as if they were recorded in a similar fashion as songs from the 1930s and 40s. But I kind of like that! It's an interesting juxtaposition between the modern nature of electronic music and the classic, old-school style of singing. It's the kind of fuzziness you would hear from an original record by Elvis or even the Beatles. The style in which the song is actually performed though is also an older style. When I first heard this song it actually kind of reminded me of some of the original Disney songs from the early era of animated movies. It's the style of singing that I've heard in films like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty, a pop opera kind of sound. The choir and the chorus are everything, as they're the ones who create and weave the melodies and harmonies into one another.
What is cool is that this entire song is built on this idea of creating an old-school vibe. It almost feels like a tribute or homage to some of the golden eras in music, especially given that the song lyrics and melody are based off a popular song from the 1940s. And on top of that, some of the greatest of the time did their own recordings of the song! We can hear the inspiration from that time period throughout the entire song. The song opens with the crackling white noise of a record player's needle and then immediately feeds into a light melody. Throughout the entire song, Disclosure takes the original melody and throws in bits and pieces of other jazz melodies to bring the background and foreground together. The jazz samples are placed on top of a funky and laid back house beat. The other spaces of the song are filled with soaring synths and active keys. The deep house chords and basslines are magically meshed into jazz samples to bring such a classic song into the modern age of music. And Disclosure does the track so much justice, making a dreamy and wonderful experience.
Today's instrumental song is by Freddie Joachim. This song is definitely on a different part of the spectrum when it comes to electronic music, but it does share some of the jazzy beats as the first song. This is an all-around calming and relaxing kind of track. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
