Louis the Child and Robotaki
This summer has been an interesting time for music. A lot of the new releases we have been hearing are not coming from big-name artists but from more of the lesser known musicians and artists. And that makes this such an interesting time for music because it is almost time to start deciding on the anthem of the summer. And though this track is a little late in the game, I think it has a fair chance in my book of being one of the anthems of the season. So let's get right into it!
Louis the Child has always been such a fascinating duo. A lot of their inspiration is drawn from Asia and Eastern Asian cultures. This makes their melodies stand out more, distinguish the duo, and provide a nice respite from the string of pop songs we normally hear over the summer. This is going to be a fun song to talk about especially because it is the latest development in Louis the Child's extensive dossier of music.
Though the duo is not as well known as DJs and groups such as Major Lazer, Dillon Francis, David Guetta, etc. Louis the Child is a praiseworthy example of musical mastery and melody creation. The work this duo has to offer is nothing short of inspiring and downright fantastic. The tracks that are already out have set a precedent for the quality of craftsmanship to be expected when listening to the duo. One thing that does stand out a bit more in this track, is that we get a deeper dive into more soulful and heartfelt areas of the music.
Louis the Child is an artist duo which constantly looks to experiment with sound. No two tracks sound the same, no two melodies are remotely similar, and even the genres the duo spans has expanded due to this experimentation. Now there are a lot of artists who experiment with their music and soundscape. However, there are very few who work as meticulously and precisely as Louis the Child in order to get a hit every time. That rarity is something which really makes Louis the Child stand out amongst the rest. The creativity and exploratory expedition the two members embark on is nothing short of wonderfully fresh and exciting. With this track, the duo seems to experiment a bit more with rhythm and synth, relying on a heavier use of both but in a way that is slightly different from modern EDM. There is a distinct 90's vibe which comes from this song, especially from the synth work post-drop. The melody is poppy and catchy, but not overzealous in trying to make everyone feel good times. There is a breezy and carefree nature to the song which makes it that much more enticing and enjoyable. As a listener, we get to enjoy that freedom and happy-go-lucky- mood, and Louis the Child sets that mood effortlessly.
The actual composition of the song is also very interesting. One of the most unconventional parts of this song is the overall BPM. A lot of EDM tracks are much faster than this, but Louis the Child decides to not only slow down the melody through more elongated notes, they have physically slowed down the beat so that the entire heartbeat of the song is at a slower rate. This is not a novelty, but it is still something which is not done often in the EDM community. But this slower BPM is what allows all the other pieces of the song fall in line. The duo makes use of steel drums playing softly in the foreground which automatically gives this song a laid back and more tropical mood. This is another unusual characteristic of the track. We don't often hear drums be used as the melody instrument, but here we are! The duo also makes use of warmer subs and synths, running up and down scales and arpeggios in a way that is radiant and soothing and breezy. The song features Wafia's vocals, and she brings a softness to the track which transitions so smoothly into the more staccato synth melody after the drop. Her voice is feathery and light and gently rests on the rest of the music.
Louis the Child has always been a duo I am fond of, and it is so amazing to hear how they have grown in their sound. They have become masters of genre-bending and crossovers, their music overflowing with creativity and originality. I am so happy to see how far they have come and would not be surprised to see them headlining festivals in the near future.
Today's instrumental song is a remix by another fabulous but rather low key DJ by the name Robotaki. This song is a nice blend of hip hop and chilled out lounge music. There is a smooth and suave energy here that is absolutely infectious. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
