Florence + The Machine and Jeremy Soule
There have been quite a few albums which have dropped over the past few days. One such album comes from the ever elegant Florence + The Machine, and as per usual, the album is stunning and haunting.
Florence + The Machine is always such an interesting artist for me to discuss for a number of reasons. For starters, each album tells a deep and powerful story about life and the human condition. Each track on every individual album has such a strong purpose and grandeur, that the story being told is so completely clear while leaving much room for interpretation. Florenc Welch does an exceptional job of creating open conversation, allowing her music to connect the thousands around the world. Her latest album is the most introspective, personal, and vulnerable piece of work. There are so many feelings and sentiments which resonate with the idea of being a human and overcoming the struggles life has thrown.
This album is like an artistic autobiography. We get to hear the personal narrative of Florence Welch's life. We are given the opportunity and privilege to delve into the life of this emotional singer and discover both the darkness and light which has molded her life. Florence Welch bares her soul in this album in a way that we haven't seen before. In the past, Florence Welch has performed songs which warrant heart and soul to flow through the music with ease. However, this album takes a look at the childhood and adolescence, the skeletons in the closet and the human journey. I found this level of vulnerability to be not only profound but beautifully sad. An interesting thing to note is that Florence Welch usually speaks with much figurative language and performs with a theatrical and dramatic flair worthy of herself. However, in this album, the figurative language and theatrics are severely lessened. Florence Welch opts for something more grounded on Earth, something more tangible and maybe in its own way, a bit more sincere.
There is an ethereality to Florence Welch, in the way she sings and performs. That enchanting grace is not lost on this album. There is a sweet and emotional nature to the album, and especially on this track. Many of Florence Welch's tracks are vast and thunderous, capturing sound and power as if she is being chased by the ghosts of her past. However, there are many tracks which have the twinkling gentleness of the harp, a fragile and delicate sound as if Florence Welch is invoking angels. That dichotomy of sound, even within the same track, is something so symbolic and magnificent. She brings an expansive range of emotional and capability and creates story after story. And while much of the time, Florence Welch's music feels as though we are in the middle of a storm, this album feels as if we are in the melancholy calm after.
This track is the opener of the album, and my goodness is it such a stunning way to begin the album. This is the song which sets the tone of the album, and Florence Welch makes it very clear as to what the album is about. This is a work of art which is meant to introspective and substantial. Rather than relying on the gale force and strength which is her voice, Florence Welch opts for a song which explores her vocal dexterity, softness, and lyrical depth. I have to admit, it was very hard for me to choose which track to talk about. But somehow my mind kept coming back to this song. I think a huge reason for that is the melodies and harmonies found woven throughout the chorus. Florence Welch creates the power and elegance she desires through softer voices and multiple layers of harmonization. There is an indescribable beauty and enchantment which is found in this track. It is as if everything about the song is shrouded in the ideals of fairytales. The effortlessness cannot be denied and from the beginning, Florence Welch has us completely captivated. I highly recommend giving the rest of the album a listen. It is a moving and vulnerable work of art meant to be heard.
Today's instrumental song comes from a video game called Oblivion and was composed by Jeremy Soule. Now I don't actually play this game or any video games in general. But I cannot deny the brilliance of their scores, leaving listeners with a sheer sense of awe. These video games scores have so much life and breath in them, something so incredibly wonderful and beautiful. There are classical elements, orchestral moments, and all are cloaked in this unique sense of fantasy and magic. That particular sound is unmistakable and movingly deep. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
