The Magician & Ebenezer and Eric Nam
Today I have some music for you by the DJ and artist known as The Magician. The Belgium DJ has been behind a number of different hits across the pond, but somehow, his name isn't as well known here in the States. One of the most unique and somewhat odd things about The Magician is that he legitimately does magic tricks while on stage. That concept blew my mind! I understand that a lot of artists enjoy putting on a performance along with a good show, but The Magician's idea of putting on a performance through magic tricks seems so odd but incredibly cool.
And just like the magic he performs on stage, The Magician spins even more magic into his mixes. This song, in particular, is one of my favorite vibes. It is a cool, smooth, and catchy track. Unlike a lot of music we hear from festival DJs, this song airs on the lounge and chill side of electronic music. There are no throbbing bass nor thumping beats. Instead, The Magician favors more subtle sounds and less bombastic mixing. He goes for those more sensual sounds and melodies, creating an ambient and danceable kind of mood for the song. The tone is set from the beginning, with a simple and soft synth line. From there, a snap beat is layered in and a syncopated drum beat. Again, these beats are not super heavy, but just enough to add a bit of an R&B flavor to the song. A lot of the instrumental and melodic dynamism comes from weaving in and around the vocal melody. If the vocal melodies are removed, the instrumentation of the song is actually simpler than it sounds. The melodic line of the synth lines is actually a harmony to the main vocals. The note changes are easy enough to follow and they never see to overtake any of the other instrumental components. But that harmony on its own is soothing enough. It gives the song a cool R&B and somewhat tropical kind of vibe, something which I really enjoy.
And speaking of the vocals, The Magician brings in the London based singer Ebenezer. This track is my first taste of his voice and singing style. But it certainly won't be my last. Ebenezer has an absolutely gorgeous voice. One of the best ways to describe the way he sounds and the way this entire track sounds, is that it captures a very nocturnal R&B kind of sound. This is music you can drive around to at night, hang out to, etc. When you listen to tracks like this, there isn't necessarily a "dark" element to it, but you can actually take in the song and listen without being shrouded in additional noise. And that describes Ebenezer's voice and style to me. He sings with a softer and gentler voice, but there is still power there. He doesn't let the music direct him, rather, he directs the way the music forms around him. And I love that sense of effortless control. The Magician and Ebenezer are two artists we will be hearing more from, and I honestly cannot wait!
Today's instrumental track is by one of my favorite Korean signers, Eric Nam. He is known for having quite a few of those "nocturnal" R&B tracks, but this specific track also shares some tropical flavors. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
