The Electric Sons and blackbear

Today I have some smooth and groovy music for you by the duo known as The Electric Sons. What I find so interesting about this duo, is that neither of them really started out in music. In fact, both of the members have backgrounds in design and illustration. One of them even went so far as to be an illustrator for the ever popular show Archer. But now we have two guys who have come together to make music, and my word is it good.

The Electric Sons tends to be more of an alternative and electronic group. Their melodies aren't of the pop variety and they certainly don't fit into the world of EDM. Their music tends to have a more indie and alternative melody and energy while utilizing the electronic instruments available to them. We hear this style of music a lot nowadays. The beautiful and seductive blend of electronic and R&B, soul, and even jazz elements has become a popular direction for musicians and artists. And I understand why! This style of music allows artists like The Electric Sons to put out a new and fresh sound while maintaining their own personal flair. So, let's take a look at this song. But The Electric Sons have taken this originally R&B driven track, and have embellished it with this sensual electronic wave of melody and sound. The song doesn't sound like the original at all, but somehow, still captures the original intent and vibe of the song. The musical direction which The Electric Sons tends to follow does a beautiful and energizing justice to the original track.

The Electric Sons changed a lot about the original track in order to create what we hear. For starters, there is a lot more happening instrumentally in the background of the track. Never do we feel like the song becomes chaotic, but the soundscape is always full. There is always some kind of instrumentation involved. Now what The Electric Sons do, is add multiple electronic layers. Softer but deeper notes are sustained in the background, not quite providing a bass line, but a similar kind of melodic base. And of course, this song does make good use of the bass, but the bass is also not heavy. We don't get the same sense of "bass" that we get with standard EDM music, filled with throbbing beats and bass drops. This cover is big and bold and brags of serious production skills. The duo has turned this R&B track into a transcendent journey of sound.  And in doing so, The Electric Sons have made a cover which stands out from the rest. I know that the original song is wildly popular, but the version done by The Electric Sons is so vastly different, that the entire composition and understanding of the song has changed. We get to experience the song through the interpretation that the duo has. We get to hear it as an electronic based track, one that drips in the sensuality and smoothness of R&B. There is also something which feels incredibly classy about this cover. The superior production skills of The Electronic Sons, have ended up crafting an incredibly elegant song while still allowing the track to be dreamy, calm, and eclectic.

The vocals that we get from The Electric Sons is oddly calming and soothing. I have to admit, I don't find the vocals to be incredibly stunning nor incredibly unique. However, I do believe the vocals are strong and perfectly suited to the style and genre of music the duo falls under. And in this track, the vocals are a perfect lightness and airiness. There is still a firm body to the vocals. They aren't breathy and soundless. But, there is a lightness to the way the vocals are performed, and the duo opts for this lighter and dreamier sound rather than a powerhouse. This all goes back to the amazing production skills the duo has. The Electric Sons do have an EP out and I highly recommend you all check it out!

Today's instrumental song is by one of my favorite R&B singers- blackbear. He recently grew quickly in the spotlight, and now it seems like his name is starting to show up a lot more often! And I have to admit, it makes me very happy to see how far he has come and for where he has to go. But his music kind of feeds into the point I made earlier. This electronically based hip-hop and R&B, this alternative electronic style of creating something sensual and sexy has grown so much. And blackbear is an artist who epitomizes this style of music. This song is actually one of my favorites! So I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
