Spark and Owl City

Today I have a fun song for you by the artist known as Spark. Now I have to be completely honest, I don't really know much about the artist. The only thing I have been able to dig up so far is his name. But what I do know, is that this is an artist who has incredible respect for EDM and the music he makes. Now, this is going to be a rather interesting exploration, as all the material and thoughts I have are based on this song alone.

So Spark. Though we don't know anything about him on a personal level or a level outside of music, there is a lot we can understand about him as an artist. And in order to really get that musical understanding, I want to start by discussing this track. This is a really good song. The musicality behind the track is fantastic and offers us, listeners, a lot of different characteristics which come together and creates a sonically solid and vibrant track. From the beginning, Spark sets a unique, enchanting, and fairytale mood which slowly incorporates a more scintillating sound. It is as if you can hear the twinkling of sunshine and the beams of sunlight which are shining down. Spark creates this charming and magical soundscape through the use of natural sounds. He starts the song off with birdsong and sound of grass moving in the wind. This kind of introduction is one that I have not heard from many artists in general, let alone EDM artists. And I found this to be so refreshing and almost soothing. The introduction is followed up by a soft piano line and those twinkling sounds of light, giving way to the EDM nature of the track. From this point onwards, we are captured in the captivating world of enchantments and fairytales, depicted by EDM and electronic sounds.

Even though the singing, the song maintains this charm and delightfulness which is contagious and euphoric.  This sense of euphoria and freedom and happiness is reminiscent of an older age in EDM. The style in which the synth and electronic lines are performed reminds me of the older tracks by Zedd and the music of Porter Robinson or Madeon. These artists, including Spark, employ some classically inspired melodies in their music. There is an upbeat nature to the soundscape and more complex fillers along with the synth-pop melodies. This style is not dominated by a throbbing bassline but has an increased focus on creating a melody outside the vocals. Spark's style of music also reminds me of Owl City. There are fuzzy synths and a particular disco and European electronica influence on this track, and I absolutely love that. It also tells us a lot about Spark, the mystery artist. He is clearly a fan of EDM and has been for a while. The incredibly heavy influence of the older EDM synth-pop tracks tells us that Spark has a respect and love for the music and genre. It also tells me that Spark enjoys the idea of telling a story through the music. He likes creating a scene and a safe place to let imaginations run wild. That is such a beautiful thing to be able to discern from an artist. Spark allows us to understand him as an artist and musician.

I've thrown quite a few artist names out there today, but for today's instrumental track, I wanted to focus on Owl City, the artist I think most closely resembles Spark. Again, all of the artists I have mentioned identify with electronic music and EDM. And even though they may gravitate towards specific sub-genres, there is a lot of overlap. That being said, Owl City seems to perfectly grasp the style which Spark has decided to pursue in the first track. There is a very clear electronic melody, and this is the melody which tells the story. The electronic work itself is seemingly simple but offers a complex blend an array of sound. This track is one of those which fills you with a vivacious and lively energy while also letting the mind wander and dream. This style of EDM is one that used to be popular, and I hope it does have a resurgence! Until then, we can enjoy what we already have. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
