Michael Collings and Tracy Chapman
Today I have a song for you which is a cover of an incredibly beloved and popular song. The song is originally by Tracy Chapman, and has seen many versions. But this today's version is one of my favorites. Michael Collings was one of the earliest performers on Britain's Got Talent. He performed his rendition of this beautiful classic and left us all completely spellbound.
There is something incredibly special and important about this track. I think part of what makes it so special is how powerful and moving the lyrics are. Not only are they relatable, but the lyrics tell a story that isn't often told. The song tells the story of a young woman in a low-income household who is trying to run away. It tells the story of a young woman who experiences the life of low-income and wants nothing more than to get in her car and drive. It paints the picture of what life is like when surrounded by hardships, and more importantly, it shows us what it really feels like to be in that kind of situation. The lyrics remind us of what its like to be a dreamer, to want something more and to be something more. They remind us of what it feels like to just want to run and keep running. But she is still resilient. She is firm in her dreams and the desire to want to leave it all behind in search of something better. But at the end of the day, the song's protagonist is not brought down by financial hardship. Her hopes are crushed by the fickleness of her lover. What we feel in this track is a poignancy for the protagonist to find happiness and to find some kind of love which whisks her away. It's something that we all long for and crave as well.
This song has seen so many different versions, samples, and covers. And just like the protagonist, this song is resilient. Not only has it been used in multiple works of art, but it has remained an important song for years. Even today, this song has prominence. It has the resilience of being timeless and a classic. But there is something hauntingly relatable about this track. It is a song that we can understand despite the fact that we may not come from a similar background. And Michael Collings fully understands the depth and complexity of this track. His performance brings out something which makes the lyrics so meaningful.
There is a warm weariness with which Michael Collings sings this song. He sings this song with a bit of a rougher edge, adding his own gravelly voice here and there. But it adds so much meaning to the song. It adds power and emotion to the lyrics in a way that singing it "as is" would never be able to express. The acoustic nature of his version is simple and raw, but also soft and sweet-tempered at the same time. Even though this is an acoustic performance, Michael Collings is able to capture the same highs and lows of the original instrumentation. He captures the sheer ecstasy and freedom felt by the protagonist when she is in her car. He is able to capture the simple beauty of just being and feeling alive and the giddiness of freedom. Michael Collings performs this with a conviction that he is going to get into his car and make it. He has the same resilience as the protagonist and performs this track as if the song was written by him. As a listener, I can't help but be captivated.
Today's instrumental song had to be something by Tracy Chapman. Her music is stunningly simple and powerful. She has a gentleness in everything she performs. From her voice, to guitar playing, to the instrumentation of the songs, everything is shed in soft warmth. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
