Jay Hayden and Drive
Today I have music for you by the artist Jay Hayden. It is very interesting that there is very little information out there about him. Jay Hayden is an artist who kind of popped up out of nowhere, or at least for me, this is a name I haven't seen around much. From what I have seen though, I think he started out on Vine which is pretty cool! In any case, the man can sing and definitely knows how to create some good music.
Jay Hayden relies on a lot of synth work and keyboards for this track. There is a bit of an R&B element to this track, but there is also a really nice electronic influence as well. In a way, I would call this alternative R&B maybe. The entire vibe of the song is one that has energy but still maintains this seductive and sensual element. The synth pop nature of the song gives the track a bit of a bounce and a liveliness as well. But what is really nice, is that the song never feels overdone or over hyped. Nor does it feel overly sensual and sexy. There is a nice blend of R&B, pop, synth work, and sensuality to give the soundscape a very well rounded sound.
Jay Hayden also isn't afraid to give the song a little bit of his own flavor. Sometimes with more synth pop songs, we are faced with music which is more dominated by the melody of the track rather than the melody of the singer. And I have to admit, I think the melody of the song is more driven by the instrumentation rather than Jay Hayden's melodic vocal progression. However, there is a unique originality which Jay Hayden brings to the song. He throws in some runs and harmonization layers which adds a lot more depth and intricacy to the track. In fact, we are able to hear that especially at the beginning. Which I must admit, reminds me quite a bit of Panic! At the Disco and Brendon Urie. Both singers have this beautiful way of creating harmonies and layering them in a way which creates a sense of depth and scope. Additionally, Jay Hayden's voice is splendid! Jay Hayden has a softer and gentler voice. His voice is incredibly smooth and soothing, which helps create a mood which is captivating. He brings that sensuality to the track and helps create an atmosphere which is perfect for lounging at night or staying up into the late hours of the night.
There is something completely compelling about this track. Everything about this track is charming and enticing. I think part of it comes from the simplicity of the track. There isn't a lot of moving parts in the track, but somehow, the song is able to keep our attention throughout its entirety. The gentler nature of the song is still something which I enjoy immensely. That characteristic is what sets this song apart as one which carries sensuality rather than sex appeal. The song is supposed to make us feel intoxicated along with Jay Hayden. I love that he is able to take the lyrics and translate that into the mood and atmosphere of the song. We feel that same sort of "drunkenness" which Jay Hayden feels in this track. It isn't necessarily sad nor is it happy. It is just this feeling of loosening up and losing a little bit of control for the night.
Even though Jay Hayden isn't an artist I have heard much from, I plan on scouring the internet until I can find more of his music. I am such a huge fan of his style and vocal quality, and I hope to hear more from him.
Today's instrumental track is from the movie Drive. While I haven't seen the film, I can definitely appreciate the 80's retro movie score. Everything about this score screams of synth pop melodies and keyboards. The score brings us the best of 80's pop, which I adore immensely. It isn't often that we get to hear this style of music in movies nowadays, so I was stoked to get that sound from the film. Somehow, it seems to suit the plot line, or at least what I could glean from the trailer. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this retro inspired theme song and please feel free to comment!
