Vic Mensa and Mac Miller & Anderson Paak.
Today I have some music for you by a rapper who has made quite a name for himself despite being out of the spotlight. Vic Mensa has made some big waves in the music industry as a lyricist and performer. Now as a listener, I can wholeheartedly understand why he has been able to do so. Not only does Vic Mensa carry power in his words, but also in the delivery. There are a lot of rappers who lean towards one or the other, but Vic Mensa has found this incredibly sweet and saucy combination which leaves an impression on everyone who hears his music.
Today's track is right up that alley. This song is a very interesting vibe, especially because it sounds very unlike a stereotypical rap track. Vic Mensa's debut track is an absolute jam, perfect for the club or a night out. He successfully blends deep house with a spillage of rap words which fall like dominoes. He carries a slick flow, seemingly removing spaces between words so that there is a smooth and continuous barrage of words. And the words are performed with amazing rhythmic precision. Vic Mensa easily switches the rhythmic pattern of his rhymes, going from rapid rhythms to more elongated ones. That effortless and seamless transition adds so much flavor and dynamism to the track, pairing perfectly with the more lucid and house instrumentation. He has a softer and airy voice for this track, keeping everything light. He gives this song such a groove that makes it impossible to stop jamming out and bopping your head. His entire flow on this track is very unique and it is clear that Vic Mensa has no problem setting his flow to a faster, EDM based beat. Here, not only do we have a rapper, but we also have a dance vocalist.
Speaking of, we have to talk about the production of this song. This carefree vibe is absolutely contagious. There is so much going on here with the instrumentals and beat of the song, but somehow it all fits together like clockwork. We definitely get some trance vibes on the soundscape. The dreamy synths and foggy chords give this song that slightly ambient and trance-like feel. At the same time, we get some really catchy eurobeats. Let's be honest, this has so much house influence as well that it leaves the listener a bit confused at first. The song is definitely what I would consider an earworm. Tapping feet, bopping heads, and swaying shoulders are all fair territory for this track. There is this throb of house beats which accompany some of the more "neon-fog" type synths. And true to the lyrics of the song, this song really makes you want to get down. This song is all about cutting loose when it comes to the instrumentation. This is meant to be a breezy song, despite some of the lyrics. That flawless blend of upbeat EDM and hip hop makes this such a banging track.
Vic Mensa has come a long way from this debut single, being featured in many other tracks and releasing more of his own music. I think this song is such a statement though. It is a testament to Vic Mensa's diverse repertoire. I mean we have seen him work with artists from Kanye West to Gorillaz. Watch out, we have quite the versatile artist here and he is sure to take over other parts of music.
Today's instrumental song had to feature some of that funky hip hop beat which is starting to make some serious headway. Mac Miller and Anderson Paak took hip-hop and created something quite unique. In a way, this song has similarities with the first one in the sense that it does serve as just a hip-hop and rap track. While the first song was more house based, this one lays its roots in a different genre mixed with hip-hop. It features a lot of soul, funk and 80's driven motifs. This is just another example of how some areas of hip hop are evolving into something entirely new. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
