Kaytranada and BADBADNOTGOOD

Alright, today I have some groovy music for you all. Now this is a nice change of pace from the past few postings I have made (which I know, have been spread quite far apart.) So today, I would like to introduce you to the Haitian-Candian producer and DJ known as Kaytranada. I have only recently started listening to his music, and it has got me jamming so much.

Kaytranada is an interesting DJ because his focus is on the genres and subgenres surrounding hip-hop. Normally, when we think of DJs, the people who come to mind are those who play giant festivals, with light shows and ravers galore. Kaytranada is a suave breath of fresh air because of his unique style. The beautiful production style that he uses brings together a variety of rising musicians, with backgrounds in so many different musical sounds. From funk to hip-hop to modern dance music, we get to hear how Kaytranada effortlessly blends and blurs the lines between genres and between being retro and modern.

What is cool about this song is that it truly is a great blend of that modern and retro sound. This is a colorful and catchy soundscape, exuding a confidence which is so smooth. Now, I feel like there are some commonalities across Kaytranada music which has to be addressed before moving on. One of those elements is the soul-infused music. The vocals and chords seem to always have a little bit of soul in them. Even in this track, between the soul-infused progressions and Syd's vocals, there is not much room for disappointment. Syd (or Syd tha Kyd) is known to be a part of the band The Internet. And we get to hear her go to work on this track. While the actual melody of the vocals is pretty easy and almost a bit generic, she does really fit into that laid-back style which the song emulates. Her voice is a good mix of being a presence and airy at the same time, which I greatly enjoy. The simpler vocals are neatly woven into a smooth 80's synth melody, and that really helps bring the song together well.

To get that retro sound, Kaytranada uses a lot of synths. It's almost like an homage to a classic funk age while maintaining some sort of modern chill. This makes this track that is equally satisfying for lounging at home as it is on the dancefloor. There is a cool tone the track, making it a bit old school and even a bit slinky. This is the kind of song which entices you to get a glass something smooth. All in all, this is definitely a feel-good track by a rising artist, who is giving something so incredibly fresh. And that, that is what makes Kaytranada so special and an artist worth tracking.

Today's instrumental had to be by another funky musician. So today I have some music for you by BADBADNOTGOOD. This is a bit more of an old school and smokey jazz song. Nicely done, this is a track that has the blend of modern jazz and more nostalgic hip-hop beats. The beautiful blend of sounds is enough to make this a track that is ideal for lounging around and chilling. The jazz-hip hop has really put in some amazing work on this track and the album it belongs to. Though the tracks are a bit shorter, this is a splendid album and honestly sounds like it could feature on the show Luke Cage.  I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
