Whole Doubts & Kevin Garrett and Matoma
Today I have a new track for you which features one of my favorite R&B singers to have surfaced within the past couple of years. I wasn't familiar with the artistic duo Whole Doubts until I heard this song. Well to be fair, I wasn't familiar with this side project called Whole Doubts. Interestingly enough, we have heard quite a bit of their work in the past as the composers of some of the biggest pop songs. But as a "solo" project, this is a fresh listen.
This track is Whole Doubts' official debut track, and I am a huge fan. This track seems like a very experimental one, as Whole Doubts wades its way into an interesting a genre-bending soundscape. This track is a subtle banger. We don't necessarily expect to hear what we do, but it works in a way which is fun and vivacious, without being overly energetic or crazy. This song posists a gorgeous balance between art and popular music, focusing on sounds that are both liberating and catchy.
There is a production powerhouse behind this track, and that becomes evident within the first few moments of hearing the track. Of course, this is a duo with os much production experience that it's actually kind of insane. But what really gave their talent away was the subtle perfection in this track. As a producer, you hold the same responsibility as a composer. Each note must be in place, the volume at a certain level, and all stylistic elements in place. With Whole Doubts at the helm, I could hear that incredible precision and decision in the song. This song is also heavily based in synth work, drenched in it to be exact. But all we ever feel is this adventurous light heartedness which seems to sweep us into a rather soothing but bubbly sound. There is a gentleness to the way the track sounds and I really like the way Whole Doubts uses a variety of percussion all the while. There is something tropical and almost even tribal about the percussion work in this song, but it is all set on a bed of keyboard and synth work. This song sounds and feels like it is meant to a bit of a smooth electronic jam as if alternative R&B and tropical house have finally had a meeting.
And speaking of R&B, how can I leave out the vocals? Kevin Garrett graces us with his deliciously sweet voice in this track. His voice is smoother than butter and sweeter than honey. But there is also a softness to his voice which really rounds out this song. It perfectly offsets the bouncier production, giving the song vibrancy and grounding at the same time. Kevin Garrett's voice helps bring that adventurous sound back to something we can really feel and interact with. Kevin Garrett has a hypnotic voice which has this amazing ability to draw us in and really vibe with the music. He keeps his voice bouncier and lighter in this song so that it rides the waves of production sound. Kevin Garrett's voice is an absolutely perfect fit for this track and adds that final touch of brilliance.
Whole Doubts hasn't been a living project for long but is one that I will earnestly follow. If we can expect more music like this, count me in!
Today's instrumental song is by the DJ known as Matoma. He is one of the more low key tropical house DJs, but is also one of my favorites. I have yet to find a track by Matoma which I have been unable to jam or chill out to. His music tends to take on a more vibrant and warm sound, while still keeping this softer and subtle. Nothing is too harsh, nor too rushed. It isn't overly energetic nor boring. His are feel-good tracks, and definitely worth a listen! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
