SMILE and Flume
Alright so here we are back again with some more music! And today I thought we could kick things off with a nice remix of an Alicia Keys song. So why a remix? I like to talk about them because there are so many of songs that go unnoticed and unheard, despite the fact that they are awesome. And often times, remixes are a great way to get listeners involved with new artists and find new songs. Naturally, I feel like this track is no exception! Alicia Keys is a singer who is most well known for her work in the R&B and soul scene, and the original song is of that same sort. But the remix is where things get more interesting.
This remix is done by SMILE, and I have to say I am really happy with the way this remix was done. SMILE did a great job in maintaining the original feel of the song, keeping the song more on the chilled out side of electronic music. I am even going as far to say that this is not your typical electronic music, and definitely not EDM. This remix is one that still incorporates a lot of elements found in R&B and hip-hop, placing this song more alongside the genre trip-hop hop.
Now this used to be more of an underground genre, but is really starting to see a lot more spotlight now with the progression of the music scene. I am a huge fan of this style of music because of how different it sounds in comparison to a lot of what we hear now. There is a greater emphasis on hip hop beats and the genre puts an incredible amount of importance on synthesizers. Normally electronic music of any kind is programmed, but synthesizers create a different kind of sound and tone. There is also a wonderful psychedelic touch to the song which gives the song a little bit more of a dreamy element.
SMILE also runs on the future bass track of music, which is definitely still an underground style of music. This is one of my favorite genres of electronic music because of how smooth and relaxed it can be. This is a style that slows it all down and has a heavier bass line. Oftentimes, bass can be a little overwhelming in electronic music. Melodies get drowned out because the bass is too heavy and the over usage of bass can drain music of any kind of vibrancy and feeling. But this is not a thumping bass, rather something that is more drawn out and elongated. It is a low energy kind of sound, which gives the song that more smooth and "go with the flow" kind of vibe, with even a bit of a seductive sound.
SMILE pretty much nailed it in all regards with this remix. He blends these two styles so incredibly well, while still involving a lot of Alicia Keys' original song. Sometimes remixes lose everything except the chorus, but with this remix we get a lot more of the original melody and lyrics. SMILE is not an artist I listen to regularly, but I will be definitely checking out his work.
Today's instrumental song is by the DJ known as Flume. This is a guy who is the underground king of electronic music. His songs always hit home with me, and I love pretty much everything about his music. This is a guy who has mastered the art of future bass, and has done so out of the glaring spotlight. Flume is pretty much a genius when it comes to creating those laidback songs that we all love. I highly recommend checking out his repertoire of sounds, because to be quite frank, its wicked. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
