Manila Killa & Robotaki and Charlie Puth

Today I have some music for you that feels so good. The first time I ever heard Manila Killa was when he performed a show during SXSW. And ever since, I have been a major fan of his music. This song is one of my recent favorites and also features the work of Robotaki.

One of the best things about these two artists is that their musical style is so effortless. I wouldn't necessarily call it carefree, implying that the music is rather bubbly. But there is something so completely smooth and fluid and undemanding about their music. Something completely free-spirited. It's so easy on the ears and though they are electronic artists, you never really feel that kind of sound. And I really like that. These two artists are more about creating an atmosphere and an environment, and they are able to create something that feels so good.

This song is super chilled out, following in the footsteps of other popular deep house singles. But Manila Killa and Robotaki put a lot of character into their music as well. From the beginning of the song till the last note, we get a song that is full of personal touches and style. Between Manila Killa and Robotaki, we get music that is characterized by conflict and triumph. A lot of times we don't get that kind of idea from popularized electronic music. This song explores the idea of a classic romance that cannot be reached, something to be yearned for. While the content of the song revolves around yearning for someone, there is a jubilant and invigorating nature to the song as well. The juxtaposition between the vocals and instrumentation is key to creating that conflict and triumph motif.

The song has a wonderful blend of both producers, creating a soundscape that is not only bouncy but has some steamier undertones as well. Robotaki brings a funkier and more beat-oriented sound, while Manila Killa swoops in with soft and warm synths, keeping the song light and dynamic. The vocalist in this song is a singer known as Matthew John Kurz. This is the first performance I have ever heard from him, but I was thoroughly impressed the first time I heard him. He has a bit of a raspy tone, something just a tad bit gravelly. Often times we don't get that kind of vocal sound from electronic artists, but I think Matthew John Kurz's voice is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for this song. His voice pleads and explores the emotions that run through a conflicted relationship. His voice is emotive and expressive, allowing us into that world of heartbreak. But there is this sultry undertone that we get from him as well, contributing to that overall seductive undertone found throughout the song. If this is what a collaboration between Manila Killa and Robotaki sounds like, I hope we get to hear more and more because I am definitely a fan.

Today's instrumental song is a version of Charlie Puth's latest hit single. To be honest, I don't really know why this is the first song that popped up into my head after listening to Robotaki and Manila Killa. Maybe its the production sound that I latched onto as being similar, maybe it is a song that I had stuck in the back of my head. I'm not so sure, but what I can say is that there are some subtle similarities between the songs. The way the bass line is meant to be funky and even a bit old school, the synthesizers and keyboards providing the top line melody. Subtle things for sure, but they are there! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
