Glades and Florence + The Machine

Today I have some music for you by a trio of musicians out of Australia. Glades is one of the most chill and smoothest bands out there right now, yet I feel like they haven't gained a huge following in the States. But that is why I am so glad to share this song with you all! Hopefully, you end up falling in love with their music the same way I have.

Glades is a very interesting band to take a look at because their fundamental beliefs about the music they make is very different. When you listen to their music, they like to tell an emotion-driven story. In this song, we get the story of a relationship, a very common subject for musicians and lyricists. However, when you take a look at the pop scene, these songs seem to be rampant with overly sexual lyrics or innuendos. But Glades does not do any of that. Their focus is to tell the real story of what it is like to be in a relationship. The lyrics are about the emotional and mental relationship that you have with another person. They approach relationships in a contemplative manner, exploring the ups and downs of being with another person. There is a raw and emotional nature to the song, which is so perfectly executed by the vocalist, Karina Wykes.

Karina Wykes' voice is absolutely stunning, and from the first line, she is able to drench the song in this yearning vulnerability. She is able to deliver this massive pop chorus, with crowd vocals creating this wonderful support. She connects with us, the listener, so beautifully because of how honest and earnest her vocals are. This isn't necessarily a performance- its an outpouring of her heart, and that creates this passion and slightly melancholy atmosphere. Karina Wykes has this smooth and melodic way of delivering the lyrics. Though the subject matter of the lyrics falls on the more melancholy and heartache side of music, the song as a whole has a dreamy feel to it, which Karina Wykes' voice is perfect for.

The production is all done by Glades. The other two members of the band, Cameron Robertson and Joseph Wenceslao are the magic behind the music. And goodness is there a lot going on here. Glades is a band that somehow is able to fall into multiple genre names, but their sound is one that is very particular and easy to feel. Some may say indie pop, others may sal alt-pop, electronic pop, or even indietronica. Either way, the first thing to note is that there are some nice electronic melodies being used in the song. The electronic lines tend to serve more as filler lines and harmony lines, filling the soundscape with this atmospheric and ambient sound. Synths come into play quite nicely in this song, and the electronic work is more subtle in this song than in many other pop songs that are popular right now. But we also get some really smooth piano and guitar work. The piano comes in during the verses, playing the chord progression of the main melody. And during the chorus, the guitar serenades us in response to Karina Wykes' voice. There is a sleek backbeat and more ambient production style to the music, allowing for a bit of dreamy intoxication as well as a tinge of heartache and something somber. Glades lets us feel the euphoric and agonizing nature of being in love. There is something lonely yet comforting. Glades makes us feel that depth and relatable state of the heart with the music, and it is simply incredible. If this is your first time listening to Glades, I hope you go out and listen to all they have to offer!

Today's instrumental song is from one of the greatest female vocalists of our time, one who is often underrated. Florence + The Machine is responsible for some of the most beautiful and raw and powerful music I have heard. The music that comes from the band always seems to get to my heart and soul, and I absolutely love that. Florence + The Machine is known for having grand and beautiful and transcendent music, all of which takes you to this enchanting and otherworldly state of mind. This is one of my favorite songs by the band for a few reasons. First, the harp melody is so majestic and breathtaking, and I really like how that is the driving instrument. Many times, songs are melodically driven by guitars or piano, but this is so very different. The drums are also surging with power and magnificence in this song, something that makes me feel wrought with strength of soul and mind. And how can anyone deny the pure beauty and grace found in Florence Welch's voice? I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
