NYK and Calvin Harris

Today I have some music for you by an artist known as NYK. I hadn't really heard much about this artist until very recently, but I am a huge fan of his voice. His voice has won him some awards, including a Japanese singing show, so that is pretty darn awesome.

NYK has a very smooth R&B style voice, one that I definitely dig. His voice doesn't necessarily stand out as a voice that is easily recognizable or anything, but it is one that suits the R&B style he is going for. I will say though, NYK has a deeper voice than other R&B artists, which makes him stand out in some sense. NYK can also really climb the scale, as evidence from the second verse shows. He very easily and gorgeously is able to climb up to the falsetto notes, something that I really look for in R&B artists. Part of the soulful and seductive element of R&B is being able to play between those lower pitched notes and the high falsettos, something that NYK is able to do very smoothly. So kudos to him on being an amazing singer!

The instrumentation behind the song is also pretty darn smooth. I would say this song falls more on the seductive side of R&B rather than sultry. There is more vibrant and dynamic instrumentation in this song, and that energy is what really gives the song that nice and seductive vibe. The beginning starts with something that sounds like a warped guitar plucked melody, maybe something replicated on a synthesizer or keyboard. This song does have some mad synthesizer game, that is for sure. The synth lines act more like note sustainers, playing relatively melodies with just a few differing notes. But that works for this song because it allows NYK to sing the way he does without having to worry about the background melodies clashing. The beats are also pretty much perfect with this song. Not too heavy nor too soft, but just about perfect to make this song work. Sometimes the percussion work can overtake the vocalization and melody, but in this case, we have just enough percussion to provide a pulse to the song while still being subtle enough to not overtake the rest. The production on this song is a bit on the simpler side, but it is fantastically well done. And that is what really matters in a song like this. With R&B, you have to have a great balance in the sounds, which thankfully, we get o hear. With this being my first song by NYK, I don't have other pieces to compare it to. But I like this direction and hopefully will uncover more dope tracks by him.

Today's instrumental song is a version of one of my favorite songs by Calvin Harris. I am not entirely sure why NYK's song reminded me of this song. They aren't even the same genre, nor the same kind of melody. But maybe something in the production made me think about this song. But true to Calvin Harris' nature, this is an awesome club song. I won't lie, this is the kind of music I love hearing at clubs because it is so vivacious and fun and filled with a good vibe. Even though this is an instrumental it is still so much fun to dance to. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
