Zedd & Liam Payne and Kygo
Today I have some new music for you by a couple of big-name artists. Ever since One Direction disbanded for a hiatus of sorts, all four members have gone off and pursued their own music. Each one of them also decided to take a different track, leading to four new artists in a multitude of genres. Liam Payne's focus has been on the electronic world, from releasing his own music as a DJ, to being a featured vocalist like he is in this song. With Zedd at the helm, the two major label artists have come up with what could possibly be a new summer anthem.
This song is a great blend of the more popular styles of electronic music right now. We all know tropical house has become a very popular EDM genre. It is fun and fresh, with a more playful and light-hearted feel to it. On the flip side, more R&B infused electronic music has surfaced a lot, with more artists taking a look at finding the perfect blend of that intimate genre with a dance-oriented sound. Zedd and Liam Payne have given us a song which can only be described as being a sultry club song. Zedd takes the best of both genres and masterfully fuses them together so that we get a seductive song which is masked by a brighter tropical sound.
One of the things I really like about this song is that the tropical vibe we get from this song isn't too energetic or bright sounding. Most of the time we get tropical music which is bright and sunny, whereas this is a more chilled out and "Moonlit" kind of sound. We get tropical music which is more apt for nights on the beach, and that is why the song works so well with Liam Payne's R&B. There are more lustful and desire driven motifs in the melody, which allows the sensuality of R&B to slip right in and make a home within Zedd's melodies. The light percussion and melody driven synth work give this song a lighter feel so that it doesn't feel bogged down in this idea of "bass drop." That being said, it is also very evident that this is the furthest Zedd has strayed from conventional EDM. But I really appreciate that! Zedd has a specific style and style of music that he is popular for, but getting to hear how he decided to expand his production is simply incredible. I will say, the production on this song is a little bit simpler in comparison to other music we have heard from Zedd. That being said, having a little simplicity is never a bad thing, especially when it fits the mood and tone of the song just right.
Liam Payne graces us with his voice in this song and takes a second round with a lead single in the dance world. I have to say, this route is not a bad one for him! This dance and R&B funk that brings to the music is so unique. While we do hear music like this cropping up more, Liam Payne does something that a lot of others don't. He finds that blend in the music, exactly how much needs to be pop oriented, how much needs to be more R&B, etc. That ability is critical to the success of genre fusions. And luckily, his voice is also able to compensate with all the genres Liam Payne seems to pursue. He brings an all around understanding of the music, from the production to the lyrics to the vocal performance. And he really does perform well in this song.
Today's instrumental song is by the one and only Kygo, and is a song I have had stuck in my head for so long now. I fondly refer to Kygo as the father of tropical house, because let's face it, he really is. Not only did he make the genre popular, he spearheaded and perfected it. And this song in particular is such a great pairing to the first song! Kygo has the ability to manipulate his tropical house sounds to right tempo, rhythm, melodic pattern, etc. and does so in a way that is perfect. Kygo is easily recognizable as an artist, but no two of his songs sound the same. This one happens to be along the same track as the first song. There is a more relaxed nature to this song, and it is also a bit softer. I really like that because it turns into something that you can listen to whenever and at any time. There isn't a certain "dance" label placed on the song, like most EDM. And to me, that is incredible because the creativity behind creating a catchy track that is also not annoying or a dance single, is to be admired. The credit must be given where it is due! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
