Oddisee and The Dap Kings

Well, things have been a bit inconsistent with the bringing new music to the blog. But, things have finally calmed down some, and hopefully, I'll get to post a lot more! But today's song is by the up and coming artist Oddisee.

This song is one of those endearingly quirky songs, with a really nice jazzy and R&B vibe to it. This is a sound that we don't hear often enough, but it is slowly starting to make its way into the popular stream of music. Now what makes this song so great is how it just oozes suaveness. Very few people remember that jazz is just as smooth as hip-hop, and the way this song uses jazz horns, gives the song a really great feel. This song is a great example of what modern day jazz could evolve into. When rap and hip hop seem to be taking over the industry, having that mixed in with something as old and vintage as jazz would be such an ideal mix of bringing the past to the present. We get this really great and prominent kind of funk, a genre that hasn't been heard from in a long time.

One of my favorite things about this song is the fact that Oddisee creates all of the music on his own. All of the instrumentation is done on his own, as well as a lot of the production in the song.  The first thing to note with this song is the layered drum and percussion work. These layered sounds serve as such a great underlying base for Oddisee's lyrics. This guy absolutely spits rhymes, so fast and so cleanly. I can actually understand everything that he is saying, which brings me to the next thing. This song is about the darker sides of love, the heartbreak and trouble and tough lessons to be learned. I really like that! It is completely different from the upbeat and happy groove that the song has, yet it somehow still works extremely well. This sound is a lush amalgamation of eclectic songs, without any dissonance. I love that, and I definitely will be listening to the rest of the album. I want to see what other kinds of music Oddisee has stored up his sleeve, and can't wait to explore his unique vibe.

Today's instrumental song is by The Dap Kings. This is a group of musicians who make amazingly groovy and funky instrumental tracks. This one, in particular, has such a great upbeat sound, one that makes me want to get up and do a little bit of swing dancing, and just general bobbing around. The Dap Kings are extremely talented musicians, and I definitely respect them and their abilities to create masterpieces. Each song is different and has a unique theme to it, and this one has a nice classic rock sound to it at certain points. This is kind of like the kickback vibe of jazz and soul, something that I definitely can dig, I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
