Rihanna and Tame Impala
Today I have some music for you that is a cover done by one of the biggest artists in the world. Rihanna has always been a great entertainer and vocalist, never shying away from the stage. However, her latest album seems to have received less buzz than one would think. I really don't understand it, considering her latest album is my personal favorite. Rihanna does some really interesting things with this album, including a performance of Tame Impala cover.
Tame Impala is a band who is nothing short of intriguing. This is a band who has been nominated for many awards and even Grammys for their psychedelic albums. It is safe to say that this band is one that makes good use of strange melodies and hypnotic sounds to create songs that are not only entertaining but addicting. Rihanna takes Tame Impala's song and runs with it. What I really liked is that she doesn't really take anything away from the vibe of the song. Tame Impala carefully crafts their music to be the perfect balance of musically enticing and psychedelic. Rihanna molds her voice into this song, making it a beautiful addition to the original. She puts a little bit of her own spin to the song and that makes this such a gorgeous blend of the two artists.
Rihanna does everything she can to makes this song something that works for her own listeners and Tame Impala listeners as well. She starts off by creating her own ghostly and hypnotic vocals, trying to appeal to the way Tame Impala's vocals are. To accompany those ghostly vocals, Rihanna takes a rather ominous and haunting approach to the instrumentals. Normally, Tame Impala is all about creating a transcendent experience, one that is all about finding that feeling of ecstasy. And oddly enough, she does it with this song. While it may not be the same overall tone as the original, we get the same sensations, with an added bonus. Rihanna doesn't actually change any of the background music or instrumentals. She simply replaces Tame Impala's transcendent vocals with something that is more soft and soothing with the rhythm of the song. She uses her voice to turn this into a seductive and sensual melody, the way the song should sound. It isn't as though Tame Impala does a bad job with the song, but Rihanna is able to really take guidance from the lyrics in a way that a man could not. The cover for this song was so eagerly requested by Rihanna because she knew she could turn Tame Impala's music into something more than it was. And she did.
Tame Impala is so used to being that one psychedelic band, one that is usually considered to be a "hippy" kind of group. But Tame Impala gave a Rihanna blank canvas to work with in order to get a song that is not only different but seductive and psychedelic all at once.
Today's instrumental song could only be by the main band of the evening - Tame Impala. This is a bit of a good taste of their psychedelic nature. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
