Drake and Interstellar

Today I have some music for you by an artist that has seemingly taken over a lot of the music game. Drake has his name everywhere, in the rap world, the pop world, even the electronic world! He seems to be one of those artists that everyone has heard of. He is the kind of artists that many people have heard, and are avid fans of. Now despite this, there is a lot of music out by Drake that hasn't really been heard and isn't that popular. Today's song is one of those.

This song is one that honestly blows the two lead singles out of the water regarding lyrics and production quality. This song takes the lyrics along the normal path that Drake tends to follow. He is lamenting the end of a relationship, putting Drake in full emotional pop mode. We do get a great R&B pop influence with this song, though, which is a different step for the rap industry as a whole. Drake has taken hold of the 80's synth and production style and has molded it into a modern version that can be easily appreciated. Drake has shifted towards a more pop version of himself, veering towards an 80's, electronica, and R&B hybrid of sounds. Somehow, Drake is able to make this work in a way that many artists haven't dared to venture in. The key is the ability to be minimalistic about the musical approach to the song.

All this song features is Drake's voice, a rhythmic drum backbeat, and an electric keyboard which repeats the same chords over and over again. The synths being used are reminiscent of an era of music which seemed to overuse the electronic piano. Re-appropriating that style of ballad piano in conjunction with the drum sample we hear is how Drake turns this song into something that brings us to that feeling of nostalgia. He fuses these two differing sounds together through the way he uses his voice. His voice flows over everything like water and bubbles up from the music at specific moments. Drake is able to let his voice and the lyrics really shine with the way this song is produced.

I love this song because of how much of a departure it is from a lot of R&B we hear today. Drake manages to make this a blend of a pop and R&B ballad and that gives the song so much body. Despite the simplicity of musicality, this song is one of the best from his album because of how perfectly woven each sound is. This is one of those rare moments when we hear how one of the most popular artists in the music industry, is actually one of the most creative.

Today's instrumental song is from a movie score that I have not been able to get out of my head. Interstellar was a movie that everyone raved about. It was a movie that got people talking and thinking and dreaming in a way a lot of movies haven't given us the opportunity to do. This score is composed by one of the greatest musical minds of our time. Hans Zimmer is a magician in his own right, bringing power and beauty and enchantment to films through his music. This score is definitely one of those masterpieces. There is a common musical theme, a motif, that persists through each composition within the score, and that motif is what makes each song recognizable as a part of the movie. This particular piece is one of my favorites. It is haunting and ethereal in a way that makes me feel like I am floating in the vast openness that is space. It is a beautiful piece, one that I find beautiful and euphoric. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
