Parekh & Singh and 500 Days of Summer

Today I have some really interesting music for you which comes from India. Now when most people hear or think of Indian music, the mind naturally gravitates towards Bollywood. And this is fair! I find myself thinking that way sometimes as well. But the hidden world of Indian music outside of Bollywood is quite amazing. There is music across all genres, from rap to rock to hip hop and folk. This song happens to fall in the genre of dream pop and a bit indie rock oriented. These are genres we tend to not see often from Indian artists, so I was definitely really excited when I heard what kind of music Parekh & Singh created.

Parekh & Singh sound so unlike anything most people have heard of Indian music, that is can be hard to imagine that these guys hail from Kolkata. When I first heard their music, there was no way I believed that the duo was from India. It just didn't seem to make sense in my head because of what I thought I knew about Indian entertainment and music. But the more and more that I listen to Parekh & Singh, the more I am able to hear the little hints drops that could have pointed me in the right decision. But this concept is such a huge thing in my opinion. The idea of dream pop and indie rock music is very uncommon in a country like India, and I love that Parekh & Singh were able to sign a record label and create the kind of music they do.

This song has quite a few really great things going on. For starters, this animated video which accompanies the song is absolutely adorable. Just had to throw that thought out there! But continuing off that point, this entire song has such an adorable sound and sweetness to it. We are introduced to Parekh & Singh with a nice and soft piano line. This piano rhythm is maintained throughout the song and is the source from which a lot of other melodies and harmonies are drawn from. Parekh & Singh immediately dive into the song afterward, showering us with a sprinkle of soft vocals. Something about the way the vocals are, automatically makes me understand that this is an indie song of some kind. Maybe it is the airy and feathery nature of the vocals or the fact that they are so gentle and on the higher end of the pitch spectrum. Either way, the vocals are absolutely perfect for a song of such genre choice. The lyrics reflect a nice youthfulness and maturity at the same time, making the vocals such a sweet compromise between the two feelings. This is the kind of music that is meant to be romantic and sweet, the kind of music for people who are very into hugs or want something that has an all around purity and uncomplicated kind of vibe, Parekh & Singh is the way to go!

The instrumentation on this song sounds pretty straightforward, with a piano and some drums. But there is so much more to the music that you would expect. Parkeh & Singh have done a fabulous job of making complicated medical and synth pop related decisions. From what I can tell though, Parekh & Singh dabbles in a few different dream and indie pop genres. They have such a crisp, eloquent, and adorably sweet sound to their music. The neo-psychedelic phases have hit places that you wouldn't even begin to imagine. And while the duo wishes to stray from an electronic sound, they have to use it for everything. I find that so incredibly cool because it is difficult to get a non-electric sound from a programmed melody and harmony. The simplicity of it all is just masterful. On the surface, the song does not feel super involved or crazy. The more I listened, the more I was able to pick apart the lyrics or hear a new part of the accompanying melody lines.I love being able to take something that sounds so simple and figure out how it actually is not the case. Parekh & Singh offer us something that is warm and fuzzy, but still interesting and sweet.

Singer-songwriter pop is not a normal nor popular thing in India. But Parekh & Singh really make this sound work in a way that is absolutely lovely. While the duo has made a departure from the traditional and classic music styles, they have still been able to find a genre that works really well. The duo presents us with such elegant and enchanting music that you cannot help but be swept in by the soft current of their music. But I want to move onto the instrumental portion of the evening.Today's instrumental song comes from the movie 500 Days of Summer. This first song reminded me of this movie and every other small film that is similar. There is this adorable indie kind of vibe to everything, and I find that to be so refreshing. The same way our indie Indian band is just as odd and wonderful. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
