Logic and Eminem
Today I have some music for you by an artist who has become a sensation within the underground rap world. Logic is nothing short of genius. His music is moving and powerful, and Logic uses his music to be an activist. Masterfully crafted lyrics and beats, Logic creates music that is absolutely stunning and incredibly enticing.
When it comes to rap, the genre has this incredible influence. From the beginnings during the 80s and the growth during the 90s, rap has been a conduit for politically and socially charged messages and lyrics. What I love about rap now, is that we are getting a resurgence of this evocative rap. For a long while, the focus of rap switched to more superficial and materialistic topics, which is something we still hear in rap today. The difference is, underground rap has taken hold of its rap roots, and has run with it. We hear two sides of the rap spectrum nowadays, and Logic airs towards the underground platform. As an artist, the focus of Logic's music centers quite a bit around racial issues and the double edged sword he felt as a mixed race child. We have seen a few rappers tackle the concept of racism, but none delve into the topic as eloquently and deeply as Logic. As someone who was caught in the middle being a biracial individual, we get a perspective on social issues which very rarely gets explored. This song in particular really takes this idea of racism and expands on the topic.
There is so much happening in this song in terms of lyrical depth and meaning. This song is really special because each time you listen, there is another statement that Logic makes that you pick up on. There is something new to get from the song with each listen, and I love the fact that Logic is able to delve into so much detail about his own thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. This song discusses so many things, but the overarching theme surrounds the idea of discrimination in society, no matter race, religion, orientation, etc. Logic breaks this song down as a metaphor for what he has seen and gone through in his own life. The entire song acts like a conversation between people. Sometimes we get a conversation between two social groups and other times it is a one sided discussion between criticizers and Logic. The dark undertones of bigotry can be found throughout the album, but especially within this song. In response to these currents of dichotomy and discrimination, we hear Logic use the power of words and speech to create a strong and defiant position. Even in this song, Logic talks about how he will make a change using the tremendous power of his voice. He makes this a personal and expansive magnum opus in order to create a deep connection with listeners and to provide a truly honest and vulnerable masterpiece.
Logic investigates his own sense of identity, discovering pain and anger and frustration along the way. But we also hear the way he finds strength and confidence, understanding and perseverance through the trials thrown his way. Logic has joined the small group of rappers who are taking cultural ownership of hip hop, and does so in a way that serves to spread positivity. I for one, was awestruck when listening to this song for the first time. The unbarred honesty is refreshing and accurate beyond belief that you cannot help but want to keep hearing the story unfold. Logic is a rapper to keep your eye on, and I have already got my sights set on when he may drop a new album.

It is unfathomable to look at the rap industry today without acknowledging the contributions Eminem has made and continues to make both as an artist and producer. From confident songs expressing opinion on hushed topics, or personal and vulnerable discussions about life and, Eminem has brought so much to the rap game. And this song is one of the greatest pieces of work to be created by him. This song is also one of his most vulnerable songs, written for his daughter.
