Boyce Avenue and Parachute
Today I have some music for you which comes from one of my favorite cover bands. A lot of times, groups who do a lot of covers get a lot of smack from listeners because they just don't compete with the original. However, Boyce Avenue is a lovely exception. This is a band who spends most of their time working on acoustic covers, and these are some of the best I have heard. Spanning all kinds of genres, from rock to R&B and hip hop, Boyce Avenue has been able to turn so many different songs into lovely and beautiful acoustic covers. I don't know how they do it! But it seems like Boyce Avenue has mastered the art of turning any song into a gorgeous acoustic rendition. The way they strip down each song to the core, and built softly and carefully around it is just incredible. There is so much soul that goes into each cover, and this cover is no different.
Drake tends to be an artist who oozes popularity. It doesn't matter if you listen to his rap or his more pop oriented material, there will never be a lack of fans. Which is why I am so glad Boyce Avenue decided to tackle an artist that big and a song that has been surfing the radio waves. This cover has been one of my favorite tracks of the past couple of weeks for a few different reasons. First of all, it is just so pleasing to the eardrums. This song is already quite and earworm, but Boyce Avenue has turned it into such a soothing and gentle earworm. When I get this song stuck in my head, it feels like something I would be hearing at a coffee shop. There is that nice indie kind of sound going on with this cover, which makes the song even more vulnerable than the original presents.
Which kind of brings me to the next point. Boyce Avenue makes phenomenal use of instruments. This song strictly uses guitars and simpler acoustic percussion. That simplicity makes this song so charming and real. The original song has a nice laid back persona, something new that Drake happens to be trying. Instead of opting in for something that was aggressive and confident or an ode to failed relationships, Drake chose to create a song that was border line dance hall. He hits that sweet spot with the song, giving us something that is a perfect concoction of dance worthy and contemporary. Boyce Avenue conveys that perfection in a way that is all too gorgeous and enchanting. The softness of the guitars and gentle plucking create that Jamaican percussion flutter we hear from the original. The rhythms are expertly carried out between the guitars and the cajon, coming together to create a softer rendition of the original song. Everything about this composition is an acoustic beauty, giving Drake's original a run for its money. Even where the vocals are concerned, there is something ever so seductive in the lightness of the vocals. something Drake doesn't seem to have yet. The harmonies weave into the main melody, adding depth to the song without adding any physical instruments. We hear the sweet croon in the main vocals emotionally commit to the lyrics at hand, and that makes this even more irresistible. The subtle vibratos, connected vocals, and breathiness perfectly serve the softer acoustic nature of the song. When it comes to cover artists, none are as good as Boyce Avenue. This is a band with chemistry and an understanding on how to make a cover something that sounds like a original.
Today's instrumental song is by a band that falls into a similar genre with Boyce Avenue. While Parachute doesn't really do covers, their style of music has the same gentleness and charisma as Boyce Avenue. This song happens to be one which makes great use of the guitar and piano more so than something like the drums. This song also happens to be one of my favorites by Parachute. This song is one that knows how to pull at your emotions and feelings. Whether it be the warm and fuzzy feelings or the colder ones, this song just knows how you needed to feel. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
