Art vs Science and The Beastie Boys

Today I have some music for you by a trio of musicians who are an odd mix of electronic dance and rock music. And this rock music is more along the lines of hard rock. Art vs Science is a group out of Sydney, Australia with an intense, lively, and spunky spirit. Art vs Science is one of the oddest groups I have heard, but I absolutely love how unique and fun their music is. This band is one that has received some mixed reviews, with some dismissing their music and others praising them as one of Australia's greatest live acts. I will leave you to decide how to feel about the band, and would love to know what you think!

But before we even get to that, let's take a look at a breakdown of this song. For starters, this is such a pumped up and fist-bump worthy song. The energy felt in this song is really reminiscent of The Beastie Boys and The Chemical Brothers for me. There is this very particular kind of sound that comes with musicians like this. I am going to try to put it in words, but forgive me if I don't communicate that clearly. One of the best ways to describe Art vs Science is to call them experimental. They have a musical style that is definitely a bit weird and at times it doesn't fit what we stereotypically call "singing" or "music." When you look at a band like The Beastie Boys, they come across as an interesting mix of hip hop and rock music and rap. That punk attitude is seen through a lot of music from Art vs Science as they find creative ways to blend the worlds of electronic music and fierce rock. They don't necessarily rely on the synths or programmed drum pads and melodies. A lot of what they do is what seems to be live instruments, bringing in guitars and drums to take over during certain points in the song. In fact, this song has lapses where all we get is heavy rock beats and riffs. But somehow that odd mix of electronic music and hard rock works very well for Art vs Science. Or at least, I think so. Art vs Science takes on genre-bending very well, and we hear that in this song. This is a thundering song which focuses heavily on the use of drums to pull the whole song together. When the song opens up, all we really get is the drum beat to carry us through the first verse and chorus. It works well though because it makes the song sound rambunctious and full of romp and caper. While the song is lyrically repetitive, you don't really get tired of the words. Half of the song is also in French, so I guess that serves as the plot twist in the lyricism. The grinding bass and persistent drive of the song pushes the song at an energy level which is satisfying, especially given how static the lyrics are.

I want to reiterate again, that Art vs Science isn't for everyone. To be quite frank, I haven't been able to get into all of their music. But I wanted to bring this song to light because of how different it is from much of what we hear today. Believe it or not, this song was all the rage in Australia. Seeing how that evolution of popular music has drastically changed is always an interesting experience. But either way, I would love to know how you all feel about the song!

Today's instrumental song was a bit difficult to decide on because I wanted to find a reference song. Earlier, I mentioned the similarities between Art vs Science and bands like The Chemical Brothers and The Beastie Boys But I think decided to go with The Beastie Boys on this one, mainly because of one song. This was once a popular song, and even today I am not 100% sure as to how this became as huge as it did. But we hear distinct similarities between the two artists. The way electronic and instrumentation are combined in this song is similar to the way Art vs Science has done it. The Beastie Boys pioneered a bit of this weird and eclectic sound, and it is safe to say that Art vs Science has definitely followed in those footsteps. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
