Jeff Bernat and The King's Speech

Today is another total shift of pace, with some lovely jazz music to start us off! This is a special kind of sound because this song features your traditional swing and jazz,  mixed with some R&B and modern beats. The evolution of traditional jazz piano into what we hear in this song is something I am really happy with and really enjoy.

Jeff Bernat is a really low key and more unknown artist, but I think his music is very creative and edgy and cool. The song itself is really cute and sweet, but the whole idea of the how it sounds and what the style of the song is, that is what really drew me to this song. When the song first starts out, it sounds like your traditional jazz song. The nice kind of piano jazz that you hear when you walk into a fancy hotel or go ballroom dancing. But then that gives way to this modern and contemporary beat, something that clearly has a little bit of R&B influence in the way the percussion sounds. And to top it off, Jeff Bernat has a voice that is as rich and smooth as some of our favorite R&B and soul singers out there.

While this is a combination of genres I have seen before, this is the song that has perfected that mash of jazz and R&B. Jeff Bernat does this really nice thing with his voice so that it keeps that old school kind of vibe. It's a softer and gentler sound, but yet there is depth to his voice which is silky smooth. At certain points in the song, the background features a vocal track. And on this vocal track, we can hear his voice, but it is slightly muffled and fuzzy, similar to the way things would have sounded on the radio 50 years ago. This adds so much to the overall mood and atmosphere of the song because it relays this sense of classics. This is the kind of song that takes you into a different generation of music, and we automatically get this overwhelming sense of romanticism and sweetness. When I hear this song, I automatically pick up on the cuteness of it always think of coffee shops and sitting next to the window with the sun shining through. Silly and romantic, yes, but it is still something we find so charming. This is just one of those songs that pulls off that really cute and romantic sound without being a stereotypical love song, and I appreciate that very much.

Now Jeff Bernat's voice has this really smooth and suave sound to it. He doesn't have a crazy falsetto or anything going on in this song, but his voice is smooth like butter. It is the kind of voice that is warm and comforting and has just a hint of a rasp to make things more rounded. He has the voice of a charmer, someone who can sing the blues, swing, or some really smooth jazz. I really like that, and I love how he was able to take his R&B and soul voice and turn it into something that has an older and more classic meaning and sound to us. I am a huge fan of this song, and the brilliance behind the production is pretty evident throughout the song. There is never too much piano, or too much beat, and not enough drums. The balance is there and makes the song a well rounded well-versedrsed piece of art.

Today's instrumental song is from the movie, The King's Speech. I fell in love with this movie. The cast was incredible, the plot was indescribable and empowering, and of course, the composer was spectacular. Alexandre Desplat is one of my favorite composers. His compositions are most known as being the Harry Potter scores. But this one is so perfect for this movie, one about royalty and dignity. So naturally, the score is very classy and very British. But I love it! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
