Papon and The Hunger Games

Today I have some Bollywood music for you since it has been entirely too long. This is a really moving song for a few different reasons. First, the way Papon sings this is saturated with emotion and longing. The basic lyrical translation of the song reflects a story of someone who has lost another. What is beautiful about this song is that it applies to any situation of loss. Whether it is someone who has moved away or has passed, this song is heart wrenchingly relatable. In the context of the movie, this song is for someone who's love has gone to another country. We can feel that pain and strife and the roller coaster of emotions with this song, and I love that so much. The multitude of emotions one can feel in the flash of a moment is well represented with this song. Which brings me to the second reason why I found this song so moving. A lot of times, Bollywood tends to favor slower and softer songs when it comes to emotional outpourings like this. However, every once in a while we get a song that defies that and brings a sense of vulnerability in a unique way. With this song, the heavy rock influence is that unique characteristic. Generally, heavier guitar work is not heard in Indian music. However, the electric guitar lines in this song make it what it is. There is so much emotional power poured into the way the guitar is played. It reflects that roller coaster of emotions, going from a softer sound to something that is loud and impassioned and complex. This song actually switches from acoustic to electric which changes the entire tone and mood of the song. The beginning of the song reflects that sweeter and more "beautiful" kind of sound that we hear from Bollywood more often. It is the kind of sound that is softer and gentler. But then that gives way to an intense electric guitar and drum line. Everything becomes more pronounced and grand. Even Papon's voice takes on a different kind of strength. This entire part of the song becomes a great crescendo of sound which carries throughout the rest of the song. There is so much more happening in these moments, with a full guitar and drum line. Papon also throws in his own little glissandos and vocal signatures. And right when the song is about to close, we go back to the softer side. The last lines are set on top of a single note being gently played. We get to go through this roller coaster of sound which reflects the roller coaster of emotions. Beginning with the softer pangs of missing someone and sadness, to the stronger and fiery emotions of hurt and pain and maybe even a little anger. Which then settles down into a dull sadness, but understanding and acceptance. I found that to be a beautiful representation. The music definitely does the meaning of the song justice. While the song is written and performed in Hindi, the feeling and meaning of the song are so openly expressed by the music. This is what makes music so special. Transcendence. This song does just that, and I hope you will be able to feel and appreciate the song the way I do. Today's instrumental song is from the movie The Hunger Games. This has to be my favorite piece from the entire series. When I first heard this, I was moved beyond words. This is one of those compositions that can make you stop and just listen. And it has the power to make you feel. This piece pulls at the heartstrings in a way that is so poignant. This moment in the films has to be one of the most iconic, heightened by the pure grief and sadness that is woven throughout. The combination of instruments and the acoustic guitar melody really do hit home and leave you spell bound. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
