Olivver The Kid and The Martian
Today I have some music for you by an artist that is slowly starting to take over the underground music scene. Olivver The Kid is one of my favorite music discoveries from 2015. One of the things that are really cool about Olivver The Kid, is that his latest album release is rooted in a common fable. The album title is enough to let us know what the tale is, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. We get to hear the way Olivver The Kid explores this fantasy, this fairy tale world. And he does an amazing job of making everything have an enigmatic meaning. This is something he does extremely well with this song. The lyrical depth we get with this song is fantastic! With this song, Olivver The Kid addresses the idea of accepting the chaos of life. This is a song about adapting to everything the world is able to throw at us. It is about trying to not be a victim of circumstance or chance, but accepting life and learning to work around the chaotic and wild nature of it all. What makes this song even cooler, is that we don't really know which character the narrator represents. Is he the one caught in the fire? Is he the one who starts the fire? Or is he the one who is trying to put out the fire? That ambiguity is a beautiful and clever portrayal of that adaptation to life. Sometimes we have to be all three within our lives, and it is just a matter of circumstance that makes us choose which we want to be. Olivver The Kid's brilliance is quite apparent in his lyrics, and I love that he doesn't just rely on well-written puns or rhymes. His lyrical pieces are in and of itself, works of art. Each one has an indescribable depth that we can actually understand and feel. This is a darker synth-pop sound that is laced in an infectious energy. I love how the drum beats are these deep and colossal sounds. They way they bring this bright life to the song is actually pretty amazing. The song also features some glitchy synths to go along, and the overall tone of the song is something that is smooth well produced. Everything is put together in a way that keeps the song cohesively flowing. Olivver The Kid was originally a drummer for another band, and we hear that percussion influence a lot in this song. There are very few moments when we get to hear a melody that is not part of the percussion section. But that unique ability to find a way to make the song work with mainly percussion is impressive. We don't' hear that often, and getting to hear the way it is done in this song is pretty amazing. Olivver The Kid is an artist to keep your eyes and ears on. I cannot wait to hear what he has in store for us next! Today's instrumental song is from the film, The Martian. I have only heard incredible things about this movie, and cannot wait to sit down and watch it. In the meantime, I have been biding my time with the score. This is a beautifully composed score, one that captures the emotional capacity of the main character very well. Though I haven't seen the movie yet, I can already glean what the emotional journey the character makes is all about, simply by listening to the score. The music is that expressive and well performed that you can follow everything pretty clearly. Compositions like the aforementioned are some of the best in the world. Feeling without seeing, that is a rare talent to elicit and somehow this score manages to do just that. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
