Kevin Garrett and Red Riding Hood

Today I have some music for you by an artist that I have not been able to get enough of. Kevin Garrett has to be one of the best solo artists I have heard this year. And the best part is that it is not solely because of his voice and singing skills, but the man has the whole package. From singing to production to song writing, Kevin Garret is nothing short of spectacular. This song is one that has really taken off and has grabbed the attention of some of the biggest artists in the world. Now what makes this song stand out quite a bit, is Kevin Garrett's subject matter for the song. He takes this song to a more personal level, an introspective level. This song is all about not looking behind you for too long, not dwelling on that which you've left behind for too long. This whole concept was so beautiful to me because it captures something that we don't really talk about in music. Kevin Garrett's first EP was all about heartbreak, so I think this is such a great continuation of that. Not looking back at the past. Kevin Garrett's song writing skills are just incredible. He has done work for a lot of big musicians, but there is something special about the songs he writes for himself. There is more soul, more emotion, more vulnerability there. And that is something I appreciate in an artist so much. We get a glimpse of his soul, something that is not easily shared. There is so much depth in the song with the lyrics and the meaning behind the song. This is a song that is actually optimistic, despite the more mellow and darkly toned music. Kevin Garrett recorded and produced this song in his bedroom. While unconventional, this method allowed Kevin Garrett to reach a point of solace while recording. Kevin Garrett is what I would like to call a crooner. He sings in a softer and lower voice, and there is clearly a lot of sentiment and emotion in the music. That low tone is nice and smooth as well. A lot of male artists that have this kind of vocal caliber have a rasp to their voice as well or some kind of gruffness. But Kevin Garrett has a voice that is so poignantly smooth. I honestly really like that, especially with the style of music he produces. This is not a typical R&B single at all. This is definitely more on the contemporary side, a sound that is like what chillstep would sound like if it were more vocally focused. Interestingly enough, there is a synth element to the song, but even then the musical focus of the song is more around the bass and the beat. Kevin Garrett has done a ridiculously wonderful job of making this song a masterpiece. I really hope more people take notice of his amazing work because this is music that speaks to the soul. Today's instrumental song is from the movie Red Riding Hood. I have yet to see this movie, and in all honesty may not ever see it. But this particular piece from the score is stunningly haunting. There is a darkness that is felt throughout the entire song, but that darkness is not necessarily malicious. This is the kind of somber and moving piece that is shrouded in this air of mystery. This score is very well done, and by composers I am not entirely familiar with. But, that just means I have another artist to start looking at! I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
