Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez and The 1975

Today I have music for you by an artist who has seen quite a bit more spotlight and popularity this past year or so. Charlie Puth really started to take off after his collaboration with Wiz Khalifa. But since then, he has released a lot of music and an album as well. Charlie Puth is definitely one hell of a vocalist. And what makes him different from a lot of other singers, is the fact that he has a higher pitched voice than other singers. In a way, he falls in the same category as Zayn Malik and Justin Timberlake. But Charlie Puth also has a very interesting but kind of distinct style. All of his songs are pop infused, that is for sure. But he prefers to stay more along the lines of contemporary pop and chillstep, keeping his music more on the laid back side of things. Now this song is one that has spent some time with radio airplay, but I can see why. Charlie Puth has done a duet with Selena Gomez, and it is pretty damn well done. For starters, we get to hear a lot of the sweet and rich falsetto vocals of Charlie Puth. It is definitely not easy to remain strong and have a clear falsetto. But not only does Charlie Puth have a beautiful falsetto, but it is also full bodied. There isn't a wispy sound to his falsetto and we can still clearly hear and feel what he is singing while in falsetto. And his ability to switch from falsetto to normal range is pretty impeccable. Not a skip nor a beat in between, he flawlessly drops from the higher pitches into lower ranges. Now Selena Gomez has the right pitch range to be a great harmonizer to Charlie Puth. I won't say that I am in love with Selena Gomez's music, but she does do a great job in this song. She is able to take on a more vulnerable voice and let that softness really shine through. Now we come to the best part of the song for me, which is found in the instrumentals and background music. This song definitely has a little bit of a tropical vibe to it. But again, it is one that is completely chilled out, like a moonlit tropical night. The song is warm but breezy, like feeling the cool of ocean spray on your face while standing in the water itself. The song opens up with Charlie Puth on the guitar, plucking away at a melody instead of strumming. We get to hear that throughout the entire song, which creates a great filler and fullness for the song. But what really catches my ear is the synthetic melody that is going on in the background. In all honesty, it sounds like Charlie Puth singing the notes of the melody, and the the pitch was raised along with some other production tricks, to create that synthetic melody in the background. But that is especially what gives this song that summery and tropical kind of vibe. I really do like this song and wanted to share it despite the fact that it does get airplay. This song doesn't get as much notice as some of Charlie Puth's other music, and this is one song that I really wanted to highlight. Today's instrumental song is from The 1975. Now this song is off their debut album, and is possibly one of my favorite songs by them to date. This doesn't have a tropical or summery or beachy vibe to it whatsoever. What it does have though, is that same sense of melancholy. But something The 1975 does that no other band can do, is give that melancholy such a wholesome but completely ambient kind of sound. This is one of my favorite bands of all time and my oh my does this song get me every time. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
