Monica Laire & Brett Patterson and The Theory of Everything

Today I have music for you that is actually a duet between artists Monica Laire and Brett Patterson. I had heard a couple of covers by Monica Laire before, but never an original song. Until I came across this song. This song is such a genuinely wonderful listen. Everything about this song is so smooth and pleasant. My favorite part of the song is the overall instrumentation and melody because of how dynamic it is. The kind of key change we hear in this song, especially in the chorus, is actually one of my favorites. It is the kind of sound that can make a song go from being a nice slow jam, to actually sinking in and feeling it in your body and soul. And the way this song has been composed is really lovely. Instead of introducing a lot of instruments, we only get a sparse number, the two main instruments being a snare drum and set as well as a guitar. This gives the song a really nice blusey sound while also having a really smooth and almost seductive R&B element. I would actually classify this song as something that is more along the lines of soul and R&B. This also comes from the vocals we get from Brett Patterson. He tends to do more of the song with lilts of falsetto, and he has a really sweet and sexy falsetto I might add. Brett Patterson has a very sensual and soulful voice, one that was mean to sing those slow jams we all really love. And the way he harmonizes with Monica Laire is simply divine! He tends to dip down and take the deeper but softer and more vulnerable notes, while Monica Laire has more of the powerhouse vocals of the song. She has a very full and confident voice, with the ability to kick it down a few notches when necessary. The two of them together mesh very well, and having a vocalist like Brett Patterson backing the stronger female vocals was a really soothing touch. The melodies of the song are completely fluid and follow the flows of the vocals as well. The way the lyrics are sung adds a lot more originality from each individual artist, allowing us to get a vibe and each individual style, but also so that the two styles can blend. And the instrumentation provides such a great crossover between the two! The drums add that really nice and smooth R&B element to the song, the way Brett Patterson does. The guitar and light plinkings we get give the song that contemporary and blues sound, the way Monica Laire's style is. Again once you hit that chorus, the way the vocals layer and harmonize combined with the scale used in the instrumentation, you can't help but fall in love with the song. Today's instrumental song comes from the movie, The Theory of Everything. If you haven't seen the film, I highly recommend it. Not only is the plot fantastic, but the acting was unbelievably brilliant. It is a biopic, but is so incredibly well done that it is hard to tear away from the film. The score was beautifully composed, with the ability to capture the almost carefree nature of a young student at Cambridge, to portraying the emotional toll life took on the family. Charismatic and moving, this score is the perfect film to the movie that left us with both warm hearts and tears. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
