Chai Town and Mickey Singh
Today I have some music for you out of the world of a cappella. This comes from a group out of Chicago called Chai Town. Now this group has to be one of my favorite a cappella groups out there for a couple of reasons. First of all, they are legitimately very good live. I have heard live performances of other a cappella groups and teams, but a lot of them fall short of their recorded performances. But Chai Town was phenomenal when I got the chance to hear them perform. Now another reason I really like this group, is because they like to mashup Bollywood songs with English songs and other Bollywood songs. We get to hear more Bollywood and Western mashups, but it was really cool to be able to hear two Bollywood songs get mashed up. Strangely enough, that is rarer to find. Now Chai Town is also very experimental with their mashups and performances, going for songs that are more different and less expected. I really like that, and it makes them more enticing to listen to. For example this song features one of the most popular R&B and sex anthems of last year, while also combining it with a Punjabi song. Nowhere else have I heard anything like this and I really appreciate that. Even though this song is a cappella, it is still really hype, and definitely still has that really seductive sound to it. I really like the way they are unashamed of getting a little growl into their vocals, which is not only uncommon to hear in a cappella, but it also enhanced the seductiveness of the song. All three individual songs were mashed up very well, showcasing parts of each original song and then weaving them all together. That is something I like about the way Chai Town works. They start out singing parts of each song individually, with no blending. And then for their last chorus and verse, they turn it into a truly complete mashup. This way we get to hear each song on their own, and then what Chai Town's mixed interpretation is. They do a wonderful job, and I always look forward to hearing more of their work. Today's instrumental song is a version of a song done by Mickey Singh. For those of you who don't know, Mickey Singh is an independent Hindi and Punjabi singer, kind of along the lines of artists like Jay Sean. Blending his Indian heritage with Western musicality, Mickey Singh brings the world of bhangra and Bollywood to the Western stage. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
