Anberlin and The Arctic Monkeys
Today I have some music for you by a band that I have and always will love. If you've been following for a while, you can probably guess which band this is. Today's song is by the band Anberlin, the band that really got me started with music. And this song, is possibly one of my favorites ever. Now this is a cover of a song by Depeche Mode, but Anberlin's is the best version I have heard. If you watch the Vampire Diaries, you have probably heard this song before. Anyway, this song is one that is so well done in a lot of different ways. First off, Anberlin has one of the best drummers I have ever heard from a band. There are only a couple of others who I would consider on par with Anberlin's drummer. Now I know this can sound a little biased because I love the band, but in all honesty, the drum work throughout Anberlin's career has been pretty darn epic. And this song is no different. What I love about Anberlin, is that they give each instrument a little solo in most songs. And when you hear both the drum and guitar mini solos, you can hear how fantastic these musicians are. So when we listen to this song, we hear a lot of things that pay homage to the original song. The dark and eerie, intense and weirdly seductive nature of the song is something that makes this stand out immensely. Yes, I did say "seductive." Normally rock music doesn't fit into that category at all. But the way the song opens, especially with the ever recognizable bass line, there is a little of a dangerous and edgy sound that makes this song like the appeal of a bad boy. This is like a grungy and gritty version of the original, something that has a dash of something raunchy as well. And that makes this such a fantastic song! Anberlin is able to capture the way Depeche Mode sees love and sex, but does so with a rock twist. This makes the song that much better, that much hotter, and that much grungier. Today's instrumental song is a song by The Arctic Monkeys. This is a popular song of theirs, the first single to be released from this particular album actually. And this song is one that always has me singing along. Now this is kind of like the first song, being able to capture sexy in rock music. I do have to say, a lot of that seductiveness comes from the way the vocals are, but, even with this instrumental version, we get a taste of that dark and vampire-esque seductiveness. There is a dark and bad boy appeal to this song as well, and that is something that really makes this song stand out even more. The bass guitar is what captures that feeling the best I think. It is a lot more prominent in this song, and that actually makes quite a difference, giving the song something solid to rest upon and build from. This is one of my favorites from The Arctic Monkeys and hopefully they continue to make music like this!
