The All American Rejects and Boys Like Girls

Today I have some music that comes from a band that was a beloved during my early teenage years. The All American Rejects was that band that everyone knew and even though people may not have avidly listened or followed the band, people knew at least one song by the band. This was the time when rock and punk bands were all the rage, and I won't lie, there are days when I really miss that time. But this song is one of the most classic songs by The All American Rejects. One of the things that I really enjoy about this band is their lyrics. This is a band that talks about the personal problems of not liking someone, but do so in a some what comedic way. The lyrics aren't poetic masterpieces or enchanting ballads, but are more blunt and straightforward. The All American Rejects are not afraid of saying exactly what they are thinking and, in a way, that is kind of refreshing! Their utter disregard for any kind of lyric beauty is made up for in lyrical honesty. Part of that comedy also comes from the music videos, which is why I have posted the music video for this song. I mean it is such a perfect accompaniment to the song itself. I have to confess, I laughed a lot when I first saw this video. The clever and snarky attitude of the lyrics is highlighted even more with the way the this song is put together. This is just an all around energetic song to listen to, one that is such an anthemic sing along. I mean it is so easy to get lost in the groove of the song and just belt out the words alongside Tyson Ritter. One of the things that is pretty nice about this song is the fact that it didn't turn to political or social commentary. A lot of bands of similar caliber have shifted to talking about those darker and more statement oriented subjects. But that is what makes this song so refreshing. It is a nice throwback to the time when punk bands talked about not giving a care about what other people think. There is a charming nature to the song because it talks about that more old school punk and grunge subject matter. Now this song starts out with this really pleasant keyboard melody, one that carries throughout the first verse, until the guitar picks the melody up. The kick drumbeat is a constant throughout the whole song, but that is about it! The simplicity of the music is so great, and in a way, adds more to the comedic nature of the song. And of course Tyson Ritter showers us with his wonderfully punk voice. You notice that a lot of bands like The All American Rejects have the same kind of vocal style present. This band is no different, but again, that just makes this song so refreshing. Considering that this song came out after the rise and and decline of pop punk bands and such, I love that it is so true to their original style. Whether we want to admit it or not, we always miss this music, even if its just one song or the era as a whole. But songs like this are a great listen to get us through that nostalgia. Today's instrumental song is from one of my favorite pop punk bands ever. Boys Like Girls was the first band I ever saw live and it was amazing! This song is pretty much the most iconic song of theirs, and one of the most iconic songs of my generation. Believe it or not, all of these punk and alternative songs are like classics. But they are classics because we love them, and this song is no different. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
