Fever Ray and The Hobbit
Today I have some music for you that comes from a television show that I have not been able to get enough of recently. Vikings is a show that really has me wanting to binge watch, and there are very few shows that make me feel that way. This is a historical fiction drama/epic show following one of the most famous icons in Scandinavian history, and let me tell you, this show is absolutely amazing. And of course a show this good has to have an equally great theme song, which it does. What I love about this theme song is that it reflects the show so well. This is a show that is pretty dark and mysterious, and the theme song definitely reflects that. This song is by the artist Fever Ray, and my goodness does this song fit the show so well. The first thing I noticed when listening to this song, is how it has this sound like the rumbling of the ocean. The deep power of the ocean is heard in this song which I absolutely love considering the Vikings were an oceanic group of people. This song is so dark and hypnotic, something that pulls you in and pulls you close. This is a song that casts a shadow over power and lust and greed and desire, but Fever Ray does it in a way that makes the song feel dark and ominous. It almost has a Native American flair to it, creating this feeling of ancient power. This song is starving, eerie, and can give you the shivers. It is like a reflection on the reality of our deepest and darkest parts of humanity, those emotions and feelings that we fight so hard. And I love that this song is so haunting and powerful because it really portrays the content in a realistic way. Now Fever Ray is a female artist which never really hit my brain till I sat down and really listened because this is a style of music that is extremely uncommon in general, and even rarer as a female vocalist. But that just makes the song even better and even more perfect. I think Fever Ray does an absolutely spectacular job with this song, and makes it something that is wonderfully eerie and subtley full of power. I recommend checking out her work because it is pretty damn fantastic. Today's instrumental song is from the movie The Hobbit. When I first heard the song by Fever Ray, this piece immediately came to mind. The characters are similar, the musicality is so similar, and both of these songs have this older and powerful thrum that radiates from the song. This composition is one of my favorites from The Hobbit score, and I think it fits in so well with this idea of strength and power and desire. I hope you enjoy the music and please feel free to comment!
